Very cute, but kitty would nab the feathers out of the simple knot with one swipe! Anyone have any better ideas on how to strongly affix the feathers to the string?

They make crimping beads for jewelry making that might work. Some of them are pretty small though. Real feathers would fit with the smaller crimp beads. They make some other crimping beads you can use with leather thongs and cord so just check out your local craft store in the jewelry section.
