Exotic Treat: Japanese Catnip
Filed under Treats by moderncat at 8:26 pm on Jan 08 2008

Here’s a special import for cats with a taste for the exotic. Matatabi–or Japanese catnip–is actually a vine in the Kiwi family that seems to have a special attraction for cats. The folks at ItchyKnee import this matatabi from an organic farm in the mountains of Wakayama, Japan. Order some matatabi “logs” for kitty today and she’ll be oh so thankful.
Available directly from ItchyKnee.

My cat loves this stuff. It doesn’t make her as crazy as catnip does, but she loves chewing it. It does make a bit of a mess, but it’s a nice kitty distraction. I’m guessing it’s also a nice natural abrasive for the teeth.

Is this the same thing as kitty Honeysuckle? I’m told it’s an asian variety of the honeysuckle vine, with purple flowers. I bought a knob of it for my kitty and she adores it- but my knob is lighter wood than these twigs. Does anyone know if this is the same thing? Kiosk also sells a (beautiful) Matatabi cat toy, here:
