If you’ve been to Target lately, you’ve probably noticed that they have expanded their pet offerings. I’m a huge fan of Target and their philosophy of making good design affordable, so I always keep an eye out for their latest cat products. This one was brought to my attention by a reader (thanks, Turi!). It’s a compact and inexpensive cat carrier. From reading the reviews, it sounds like it works best with kittens and smaller cats. The soft material has both pros and cons — it’s safer if your cat is prone to hurting herself inside a hard carrier, but it may be a bit flimsy if she tries to claw her way out. It definitely has space-saving advantages, since it folds up for easy storage, or you can leave it out for them to play in between trips to the vet.

Finally, the major pet product retailers are starting to stock some more stylish options, like the Dream Curl from Petlinks System. The Dream Curl is a stylish scratcher that provides a variety of surfaces for scratching, playing, and lounging. It incorporates both carpet and sisal, allowing kitty to choose her favorite. The curved form creates areas for napping and perching, plus there is even a little toy that hangs underneath the curve for a fun surprise every time kitty walks by.
I purchased one of these the very first time I saw it and I have to say, it is one of the cats’ most favorite objects. Everyone takes turns lounging, jumping, and scratching on it. (At this very moment, Dazzler and Flora are both kicking the heck out of it.) The little toy came off right away, but it was a good idea. The cats absolutely love their Dream Curl, plus it is quite durable (except for the toy). There is almost always someone playing in it, on it, or under it. This is an extremely well-designed product with a very affordable price tag.

Perfect for lounging the summer away, the cat hammock from Cat Above is a sleek and simple design that your cat will love. The frame is handmade using hardwood and is easy to assemble. The two-sided hammock has delux fleece on one side for the cooler winter months, and cotton on the other for warmer weather. Kitty will let you know which side she prefers.
And here’s the best part, for every cat hammock purchased, Cat Above will donate $5.00 to the animal rescue organization of your choice.

Moved by recent news stories of all the homeless pets now in shelters as a result of the troubled U.S. economy, 12-year-old Mimi Ausland of Bend, Oregon decided to create a website to help feed these animals in need. She created FreeKibbleKat.com, a site that offers a daily trivia question for visitors. Answer the question everyday and whether you’re right or wrong, you will donate 20 pieces of kibble to help feed cats currently living in shelters. Each month the total amount of kibble is calculated and delivered to shelters. Mimi is currently helping shelters in Oregon, but she hopes to expand the program to support shelters nationwide.

Mimi was recently interviewed on the NBC Nightly News, which gave her program a big boost. I encourage you to go to FreeKibbleKat.com daily and contribute to this noble cause. It won’t cost you a thing but a few moments of your time, and you’ll learn interesting trivia about cats by answering the question. A big congratulations to Mimi for putting this excellent program together!

I came across an excellent post about another DIY cat climber project using the Bjarnum shelves, but this time the shelves are covered with pieces of a rough-textured rug to keep kitty from sliding off. Nice touch!

The original post gives all the details on exactly how to make these shelves yourself, complete with excellent photos. There are even plans for the next phase of the project.
WARNING: There is just a little bit of inappropriate language in the original post, but the project was so well documented, I had to share it with you.

Cold cat food straight out of the fridge is just unacceptable for most moderncats. Now you can easily warm up kitty’s morsels with some Italian style. The ET (or eco-thermic) bowl, from Italian pet design company United Pets, is a stylish and functional little product. Simply fill the lower compartment with hot water to warm food in the upper bowl. The ET bowl comes in three sizes and a variety of hip colors and patterns.
