In keeping with the preparedness month theme, I just had to share this little gem with you. It’s a pet emergency evacuation jacket. It is a flame-retardant suit with a handle on top and big pockets on the sides filled with emergency supplies and a manual (written in Japanese, but the website says it is “self-explanatory,” whew!)
This over-the-top invention is available from Japan Trend Shop for $480 US.
Thanks to Christine for the find.

I remember a fire drill in an apartment building I lived in once. My cat hid under the bed. I worry that if something does happen that I won’t be able to find our cats in order to get them out safely.
However, my female cat would slink to the ground as if she couldn’t walk if I put this one her

Cute, but there is NO way my cats would allow this to stay on them for more than 0.5 seconds.

Awesome! My cat’s wouldn’t like to wear this, but at least I’d be able to get them out safely in an emergency

I’m sorry, this is HILARIOUS!!!! I want to start carrying around my cats by a handle

A cat handle. How convenient! And I think the instructions would be self-explanatory to CATS, all of whom understand Japanese (in case you didn’t know this).

We had a fire in our building, and the first thing I did was to put my cat in her box, in case she panicked, tried to get away and got lost or worst. I deserved a gold medal for that 10 meters I ran to fetch her box, then her ! While I appreciate the idea (and the hilariousness of it !), this cat can still walk and escape. Like an astronaut, sure, but still… bad idea.
> Cranky Ashley: it’s my cat who actually woke me up ! She could smell the fire before I did, and I was asleep. She doesn’t sleep in my room, but I always leave the door opened. It’s the first time she ever came in our bed at night (husband absent at the time), woke me up gently but firmly to tell me something was wrong. In a way, she saved me from intoxication, because it was winter and my windows were closed, so the smoke kept accumulating. I’m kinda proud, in a weird cat-lady way, that she thought me important enough to wake up in an emergency situation.
So don’t be afraid; cats, like poeple, raise up to the occasion. I’m sure yours would too !

Not a chance of getting this on in an emergency (and, CrankyAshley, we’d have a slinker on our hands too if we did suceed) but having an emergency exit strategy for our pets is essential. We live in a highrise which means we have to move fast to the stairwell with our Meow then we need to wait out on a busy city street with hundreds of our neighbours. So we have her carrier out by the bed always – good thing it’s stylish, with a copy of her vet details in the side pocket. We have a torch, fireblanket and extinguisher by the front door, so it really just makes sense to be prepared to get our furry loved ones out safely with us.

And just what would my beautiful, very sweet 16 year old Burmese be doing with all four paws exposed under this jacket? It’s horrorfying to think about. The jacket would really piss her off and no person, place or thing would escape unassualted. She keeps her nails very sharp and is very circumspect in using them but a handle on her back would give her the opportunity to show what she can do in such extreeme circumstances, it boggles the mind!!!!!
I have no doubt she would wake me up if she smelled smoke, she’s smart and as partners we take care of each other in a bond of trust, without a handle on her back.
