Toilet training your cat. They say it can be done, and CitiKitty has put together a complete Cat Toilet Training Kit to help make it incredibly easy. Now, I haven’t tried this yet myself, but after reading all about the CitiKitty I think I’m going to give it a shot.

The kit includes a training seat that is placed underneath the toilet seat to transition your cat from the litter box to the toilet. There’s also a training guide and a tip sheet, plus a packet of CitiNip catnip for use during the training process. The training guide has explicit instructions on how to first move your cat from using the litter box to using the toilet with litter, and then to using just the toilet with no litter. It’s a multi-step process that can be used with any cat that is healthy, at least three months old, and already successfully litter-box trained. It is also possible to train multiple cats at once.

According to CitiKitty, the benefits of toilet training your cat include:
- NO MORE LITTER MESS Toilet trained cats do not use kitty litter, eliminating the mess and smell of a litter box from your home.
- BETTER FOR YOUR CAT Because your cat is toilet trained they will no longer be exposed to chemicals and silica dust found in many litter brands, which has been proven to cause respiratory and other health-related problems in cats.
- SAVE $$$ Toilet trained cat owners have the luxury of not having to purchase kitty litter, saving them thousands of dollars.
- BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Each year more than 4 billion pounds of kitty litter is sent to landfills in the United States. Most of that litter is made from strip mined clay which is a non-renewable resource. By toilet training your cat you help preserve precious resources.
- MORE TIME FOR YOUR CAT Why spend endless hours cleaning up a litter box when you can be spending it playing with your cat!
Now, this may not be for every cat, but there are an awful lot of comments from satisfied customers on the CitiKitty website, and there seem to be quite a few success stories, so it just might work for your cat.
A few words about flushing cat feces
This is a controversial topic, as we found out last year during Litter Week. I uncovered some important information, first read this post about the problems that can be caused by flushing cat feces, then make sure to read the follow-up post about how it can be quite safe to flush in most situations.

I have been tempted in the past to try TTraining my cats. I’ve always stopped when I’ve thought about my queasy-stomached teenaged son having to remove the litter pan everytime he wants to use the toilet- at least for the first little while (late night, bleary-eyed…). But this system is intriguing… I would try it for sure!

I’m so tired of kitty liter being tracked around my place. Very tempting idea.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:32 am
I desperately need this! 3 smelly cats… boy would it make my day to have them use the potty!
November 12th, 2009 at 11:45 am
while there is a definite humor aspect to a cat using a toilet, if it worked it would be amazing and save a lot of clean up time with litterboxes. im up for the challenge!
November 12th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
My mom’s childhood cat toilet-trained herself! I’ve always thought that was magical
. I’d love to give this a try!
November 12th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
I’ve never tried to toilet train my cat…but if it worked my life would be A LOT EASIER…
November 12th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
i would love to toilet train my cat
November 12th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
I’ve always wanted to try this!
November 12th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
I started trying to toilet train my cat, but then ended up living somewhere he couldn’t get to the toilet, so I had to switch back to the litter box. But I’m ready to try again now that he can get to the bathroom.

-I would love to try this with my little furbabies!
November 12th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Sounds like a great idea!
November 12th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Would love to have the kitties learn this trick.
November 12th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
sorry for the multiple comments! I kept getting the – Sorry, looks like you’ve already said that” message so I changed my post and they all went through!

November 12th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
I need this …. I want this….I am gonna do this EVEN if I don’t win. 17 years of kitty litter, cat boxes of all sorts, etc. ENOUGH!!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
I’ve been wanting to potty train my cat. This set looks quite helpful.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
So glad someone finally thought of this! My kitty doesn’t dig in the box…she just goes right on top of the litter… this leaves for a lot of smelliness and probably TMI!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Geez, there’s problems with doing anything anymore, huh? I’ve never tried to toilet train a cat, although I’ve considered it.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
I’m actually trying to toilet-train our five-month old cat and a lot more difficult than I thought! We’re just using a regular plastic bowl that fits into the toilet, but it’s a lot harder because it doesn’t have the rings cut out in it. Would love to win this and reduce our mess, smell and trash!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I’ve always wanted to toilet train my cat! If I win this Shelby will be a litter free kitty!
November 12th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
I have never tried this but I would love to have my cats potty trained.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
I have tried to train my cat to use the torlit before. the hardest part was finding a bowl that fit but didn’t sink. This looks like it has that covered. I want one!
November 12th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
I would love to win this package. I have a few cats that will go in the sink and occassionally in the toilet.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I think this is the cat’s MEOW!!! I purchased a self cleaning litter box, it was a waste of money but this is such a better system. I want it, I want it, I want it……….. Janice
November 12th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
This would be great for my indoor cat
November 12th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
I am very curious about how my two cats my do learning with the City Kitty Cat Toilet Training Kit. Both my cats seem to gradually stand up while they pee so hopefully they can aim for inside the toilet seat! Having just moved into a small apartment it was a struggle squeezing the litter boxes into my tiny bathroom. It would be nice not to have the litter boxes and their smell right in my, or my guests, faces while using the bathroom.
I would love to give it a try!
November 12th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
I’d love to toilet train my cats. In January my cats started using Swheat Scoop litter, and flushing that has really cut down on my garbage, but toilet-training would be even better.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
i love the idea of having toilet trained cats. i’m not sure if i (or my cats) have the patience to get through the training. but i’m definitely willing to give it a shot if it means i could be on my way to having a litter box free apartment!
November 12th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
I think toilet training my cat would be a great alternative to the kitty litter. I’ve been wanting to do this for some time but I’m worried my little girl would miss the digging to cover the smelly mess up. I nearly break my back dragging up the 40 lb tub of kitty litter and I’d like a more environmentally friendly way to reduce waste and prevent her from being exposed to potentially toxic chemicals in the litter.
We have a toilet right next to her covered litter box so I think it would be a pretty good transition if we make it her own toilet. I know it’s possible to teach them to also flush, but I think she’d play with it too much! I”d love a chance at this with the kit! Please pick me!
November 12th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
I could really give this a shot – I tried toilet training my 2 kittens 3 years ago when I first got them, and I used a homemade method of plastic that I cut holes in. It was a long process, and in the end I was able to get them to consistently go #1 in the toilet but then they would jump down into the bath tub for #2. I would love giving it another shot because it is so wonderful not having to deal with a litter box and litter!
November 12th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
I think at least on of my cats would be amenable to using a human commode.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
I’d love to try it with my boys – they’re fairly intelligent and will submit to “training” when it suits them.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
I’ve always thought about trying something like this.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Interesting notion, although I suspect this is one of those ideas that humans may think cool, but cats aren’t as taken with.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
One ofmy two boys is fully potty trained. The other (non-dominant cat) is still having a hard time and is back to not using the toilet. It really works! It can take a LONG time. I’m talking over a year even. There are fell forums out there for help along the way. But the patients absolutely pays off once you both don’t have to deal with the litter box any longer! I sure wouldn’t mind these goodies in this giveaway.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
I’ve always thought it would be wonderful to potty train my cats, as there are three of them and cleaning litter all the time is tiresome and smelly work! Since I’m mildly allergic, sometimes I get really sick by doing it. I would love for my cats to be able to take care of their own business this way (although I’m sure a human would still have to flush, huh?)
November 12th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
I wonder if my cats could be potty trained – I’d love to find out!
November 12th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
I never really thought about toilet training a cat. Wow im willing to give it a shot.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
Can they be trained to flush afterwards?
November 13th, 2009 at 2:05 am
I found a DIY site with a list of materials needed and instructions on toilet training your kitty. Before I could implement one of my darling felines took up urinating in the sink directly over the drain, if only they were all that clever and motivated. However, this kit would be a real help in working with the rest of my indoor domestic colony. Kudos to CitiKitty for the great idea.
November 13th, 2009 at 5:40 am
My family is moving to a new house soon and I would love to have the cats toilet trained. There is a bathroom in the basement that would make a great bathroom just for them.
November 13th, 2009 at 6:05 am
oh how nice it would be not to have to scoop litter anymore
November 13th, 2009 at 6:42 am
This looks like fun, not sure about when I’m waiting on my cat to go when I need to! :1
November 13th, 2009 at 6:54 am
Wow, that would be awesome. I have three kitties and have wondered what the process is in teaching cats to use the toilet. Oh the benefits!!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 8:40 am
I’ve thought about doing it before. My roommates have a cat too… I don’t know if they would be cool with it, or if their cat could be toilet trained too.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:58 am
I would love to potty train our cats.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:30 am
I wonder if my four kitties can be “toilet trained.” That would be a wonderful savings–of time and money and ROOM (no more large litter boxes taking up space in my teeny tiney apartment). And it would be so much better for my allergies.
BTW: I love your site and always look forward to receiving your blog entries.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:56 am
This would be life changing! No more scooping poop!
November 13th, 2009 at 9:57 am
I had a friend whose cat was trained…I would love to get rid of my litterbox!
November 13th, 2009 at 11:10 am
I love this idea! What a clever way to potty train a cat by using the litter that way! I have 5 cats and I think that my “Curry” boy would learn quickly! Someone will be quite the lucky winner and lucky kitty parent, too!
