I definitely need to live in Japan. Perhaps you remember the unbelievable cat-friendly house from Japan that I posted last year. Well, here is another one that may be even more incredible. The Cats’ House designed by Japanese architecture firm Fauna +DeSIGN was built for the owners 16 cats (and 5 canines). It has every kind of climbing and perching structure a feline family could ever dream of, all integrated beautifully into a modern interior.

There appears to be great attention to detail throughout the house. Notice the rounded corners on the climbing shelves. Much safer for cats than sharp pointed corners.

There are even access areas for humans to make it easier to clean the upper perching areas.

Lots of natural light gives the space a wonderful open feel. This handsome silver tabby is certainly enjoying himself!

Catwalks and shelves galore along with secret tunnels and passageways just for cats.

This giant floor-to-ceiling sisal-wrapped scratching and climbing post has got to by my favorite feature.

This amazing house was recently filmed for an upcoming show on Animal Planet. There are many more photos at www.catshouse.jp as well as some videos of the cats enjoying their home.
Thank goodness that Goma’s mom Sachie understands Japanese, because she keeps finding these incredible things! Thanks, Sachie!

That’s simply amazing! Any way to get a date on the Animal Planet episode, or at least the show name so we can look for it?

I have never seen anything quite like it! Just amazing! I would love to build something like this for my cats…which would probably lead to getting more cats, so good all round.

Wow, that’s really awesome! I won’t be able to make my home so cat friendly, but I’ll definitely start wrapping some columns I have in the basement with sisal. Thanks for the inspiration, Kate!

Totemo sugoi desu yo ne !
I cannot even imagine how much a house like that would cost in Japan, and I have to go read the articles in Japanese because ,where is this ? What city ? Because anything more than 3 cats, even in a house,is unheard of in Tokyo .
As a foreiger living there anyway.
You cannot even have a pet in an apt if you are not Japanese, and most landlords of homes, put a 3 pet limit.
My friend Koy has a house in Mejiro in Tokyo, and she has 2 cats now,and she used to have a spider monkey. The landlord was fine with it,but its a house.
Pets, pure breeds anyway, are also vveerryyyy expensive there.I’m surprised to not see even one bob tail,,as those are the strays you find on the streets there.
I used to feed strays over by Shinjuku station. And there’s a brood of cats that seriously run a food scam on people getting off the train at the station in Yokohama. Its hilarious.
If I ever win the lottery,I am commisioning these guys to rebuild my house in NYC.
Its amazing .
*sighs*

Wow, that is just amazing. I hope the cats here do not see that fancy house. How wonderful for those cats.

My cats are sooooo jealous. Is it going to be on Cats 101? If you haven’t watched Cats 101 yet, you should. It is interesting, but the best part is that my kitties love seeing the cats on TV. They could care less when any other programming is on–but as soon as Cats 101 comes on they perk up and their tales start swinging…

What an amazing place!! I wish I could do this for my cats

“In the next life, when we’re both cats,” (as Penelope Cruz said to Tom Cruise in “Vanilla Sky” — possibly my all-time favorite film quote) we all hope we get to live in a house like this! What a gorgeous environment for these very fine cats (that silver tabby boy has my number!) and what a great family!

That is wicked cool! I would love for my cat room (yes I have a cat room) to be that cat-friendly. *sigh* There are so many things we can do with money! meow!

Wow. I am SOOOOOO not telling my cats about this. I can’t possibly compete!
December 2nd, 2009 at 6:06 am
But where are the soft fluffy cushions? My cats demand soft fluffy cushions.
December 2nd, 2009 at 10:57 pm
See… it’s pretty to look at.. but it’s *hard*. I mean, I realize the corners are not sharp, but the rest of it is all …. HARD. My Armarkat cat tree may not be modern and sleek, but it has soft places for kitties, and they spend all their time on it because of that. I just can’t see my kitties wanting to sleep on any of these areas. I have hardwood floors, and the cats never sleep on them.

Wow what a fancy design

Only in my dreams but your reality. Do you have a housekeeper to dust the kitty area or do you do it?
January 27th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
Missy, I don’t know when you went to Japan, but if you own your home, you can do whatever you want there. Only renters have rules to follow about pet numbers, AND sizes too. Space is very limited and some apartments are 1 small room wide but 3 or 4 stories tall, in 3 meters wide building stuck behind 2 others. Non-Japanese are a different story but only because no one wants an animal to be left behind when people leave and non-Japanese almost never stay there very long. Most come for 1-2 years for work in corporations. Also, I never saw cats at Yokohama station, regular or bullet train. Perhaps they were only there the day you went? I don’t blame them or asking for foos though. But no one eats in the street (it’s rude) except them!
