We’re doing a little research on scratching and we need your help. We want to see photos of where your cat scratches — the good, the bad, and the ugly. We’re not looking for pretty magazine photos. We want to see where they scratch, what they scratch on (different materials like sisal, carpet, cardboard, wood, etc.), how tall or long the scratching surface is, is it a vertical or horizontal surface, and anything else you think is important.
Just snap some shots of where kitty scratches and email it them to me at kate [at] moderncat [dot] net along with any thoughts you have about ideal scratching surfaces. As a thank you, everyone who sends in their photos will be entered into a drawing to win a brand new special secret scratching prize that will be revealed next month.
Please label your photos with your name and consecutive numbers (JoeSmith01.jpg, JoeSmith02.jpg, etc.)

We’ll do that, Kate! We have lots of scratching implements all over the house, both vertical and horizontal, so everyone can have what (s)he prefers. Everyone loves them, except for Rani, who’s mad about the step down into the living room from the entry hall.

This is funny, my cat loves everything with texture but she has no nails! (No, I did not do that to her, I got her from a shelter declawed). Anything from the couch, my purse, the bedspread/quilt. It’s amusing how she keeps the instinct even without nails.

I’m going to do this, too! My cats have several options, but one still insists on scratching the carpet. At least it’s not the couch

@ jmuhj
One of my cats does the top-step thing too! Even though she has other spots she enjoys scratching, she still loves that one.

Okay, I have been away from my computer and I am late. My oldest cat and her brother were taught on carpet wrapped around a door frame (with no door). Now the favorite is an old wooden Peaches crate. It does shed little pieces of wood, but Lucy loves to get in the crate when it sits on its long end and reach up and scratch. Hope this helps.
