Goodbye to My Sweet Sophie

Loss & Memorial

Today I had to say goodbye to my sweet kitty Sophie. Sophie was an older cat, probably around 20, I’m not sure. She had only been with me for five years, coming to me after her owner passed away. She was such a tough cookie, fighting kidney failure, feline diabetes, and arthritis. She just kept going and going, and I know she would still be going if her little body hadn’t given out.

This is the first cat that I’ve lost as an adult and I’m just heartbroken. Even though I knew she’d be the first to go, you’re never really prepared to loose one. As you probably can tell, my cats mean the world to me and I cherish every moment I have with them. These little creatures are there every day as part of your life. You build a daily routine with them and when one leaves, there’s a hole.

I know this is what everyone says when someone you love passes away, but this experience is just a reminder to appreciate the time you have with your feline companions. These special little souls are each so unique — they are full of personality and can touch our lives in deep and meaningful ways. Everyone, please go give your kitties a kiss and tell them how much you love them.

So sorry about your loss, but she had a long life and was surely loved, RIP Sophie…

Sophie was surely a lucky girl to have been given such a kind and loving people in her life- not just once, but twice. She was a beauty too!

I give my brood here kitty kisses everyday knowing they pack in their short lifetimes more love than most humans give in their lifetimes.

On Sophies way to Rainbow Bridge she will meet a few of the cats/dogs I have had the pleasure of knowing, she will make plenty of friends.

The hole never truly ‘closes’ for the one you miss, but, the hole is another place to fill with another who needs you as much….

It’s very moving, and she’s very beautifull and seems kind.
All the best to help you through this…

So sorry for your loss. I kiss my kitties every day and tell them they are the joy of my life. I lost 2 to cancer last year and they were only 10 + 11. It broke my heart because it was soooo sudden.

oh….I’m so sorry. There is nothing to say that can ease your hurt, as your friend is gone. What a huge void they leave behind when they have to go. Hugs and sympathies. Although I didn’t know her, I too feel a loss.

So sorry to hear of your loss; that’s so tough. Take care.

  16. 16

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss of Sophie. I have an adult cat, around age 16 that I’ve had her whole life, & I’ve been attempting to mentally prepare myself for when she passes. These are more than our pets, they’re our children. Just know you gave her the best life possible in those last years after you took her in & that she lived a long & loving life!

  17. 17

So sorry, I watched a few of my friends cross the Rainbow Bridge over the years and it is always with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes. Cherish the memories.

  18. 18

So sorry. She was beautiful and I know she had a wonderful life.

I am so sorry for your loss of Sophie. My heart breaks for you but you should have peace that you gave her such a loving home for the last 5 years of her life. It’s amazing how animals can fulfill our lives. I’ve yet to lose one of my own cats and not having had pets growing up, dread the day I lose one. I recently had to deal with the news that one of my beloved fosters, Bobbycat, passed away and that news brought me to tears at work. I can’t imagine. Sounds like she was a special cat.

Peace and blessings, Kate, on you and beloved Sophie.

  21. 21

So sorry to hear about your precious Sophie. She obviously was very much loved her whole life.

  22. 22

I’m so sorry for your loss. This beautiful cat looks just like the first kitty I had as a child. She also blessed my family with a long life. Take solace in knowing that you made her final years ones filled with love and joy. Her memory will always bring you happiness just as seeing these pictures have brought back all the happiness I had with my first.

  23. 23

I had to say goodbye to my 19 year old cat a couple of years, too. I was sad for a long time, and even now when I think of her I become sad. What has helped me is to know that we did the best that we could, gave her the best life that we could, and appreciated everything about her. It also helps to remember that she was put to rest, rest from her physical hardships. I hope this helps you a little bit.

  24. 24

I’m so sorry for your loss, I know we all wish they would stay with us forever… and in a way, they do, in our hearts.

  25. 25

    I’m so sorry. :(
It DOES leave a huge whole, and we are never quite prepared for that.
But, where she is now, there are no more kidney problems, arthritis, or diabetes. Goodbye, Sophie!

  26. 26

Sorry to hear about Sophie, she looks like such a sweetheart. It is so hard to loose a pet, just remember that she is no longer hurting.

  27. 27

My deepest sympathies for your loss. Your affection for your cats shines through your work here, and Sophie was very lucky to have someone like you looking after her.

Over the past 2 years we had both of our “children” go on to the Rainbow Bridge. We had them both since we first got together over 17 years ago and they too were our first loss as adults. We still miss their individual personalities and the ways they made our lives special by Amy rolling over and showing her titties, or George giving us kitty kissies. But we now have two new cats that bring their own special joy into our lives. We know your loss and it is hard, but my Mother was right. She said that when you lose a cat, the day will come when you will get another to share the love you have to give. Sophie will be waiting for you at the bridge when it is your time to leave this physical existance and you will be together again.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I pray that eventually your sadness will lift with time and you will be able to remember her with smiles instead of tears.

Awww Kate, so sorry that it was Sophie’s time to travel to the Bridge. No matter how long they are with us, it is never long enough. Thankfully you were able to give her a wonderful life after her owner passed away. Run free and healthy, again, sweet Sophie.

You have my deepest sympathy and condolences.

Sophie is a beautiful little soul. Bless her for sharing part of her journey here, with you. Bless you for giving her a loving and caring home. May love get you through this difficult time.

I’m so sorry about lovely Sophie. I have an older cat named Sophie, too. I lost my beloved 16 year old cat Simone a little over a year ago, and it is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced, and it is really, really hard to get through, and I feel for your loss. She looks like she had a wonderful life with you.

  33. 33

{Kate!} Sending hugs your way. It’s so hard to lose a member of the family. Take care of yourself and the rest of your loved ones…

  34. 34

Very sad to hear about your loss. I’m sending hugs your way. It makes me very happy to know that you were there for her. It is obvious that Sophie lived a wonderful life with you as her human companion.

I lost my Sophie last December after a five year battle with diabetes and a myriad of other complications. She was my girl – with me for 15 years, through major life moments. They are our partners and loosing them can feel like loosing part of yourself. My husband and I still talk about her often – how she would react to something, or what she might be doing. It think it has helped to make that hole not feel so deep.

going to kiss my kitties now. Take care.

  35. 35

lots of hugs to you, sorry to hear you lost sophie, but just know sophie was loved and cared for is the most important thing.

  36. 36

I have tears in my eyes for you – it’s so so sad to have to say goodbye. Thank you for sharing with us, as we all need to be reminded sometimes that everyday we have with our animals is a blessing….I will definitely give my kitties some extra-special attention and say a prayer for Sophie.

  37. 37

Sophie will never forget how you walked the last miles with her. My 19-year-old, who I adopted at 15, just began fluid therapy for kidney failure, and though she’s doing well it’s time to start preparing ourselves. My thoughts are with you.

  38. 38

My heart goes out to you. It’s never easy saying goodbye, but I am sure you will cherish the time that you had with dear Sophie. It’s a wonderful thing, when you can give your love to a cat in their final years, knowing they were giving you so much love in return. Peaceful Rest, Sophie…

  39. 39

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s so hard to let them go.

I don’t know what your beliefs are, but I always comfort myself by imagining the additions the angels in heaven are adding to my mansion to please each kitty I lose. Shy gets a big front porch where she can lay in the sun; Blacky gets a garden he can play in and not have to worry about traffic; Meek gets a never empty food bowl; Kalea gets a really fancy, tall cat tree (or maybe some of those cool shelves that go up and all around the room I’ve seen here); Stormy gets a room of her own so she can pretend she’s the only cat…

I am so sorry for your loss and know how you must be feeling. We lost my dear Snarf, who was two months short of 22 years old, a year ago in December. He died in my arms of old age, and two weeks prior was still loping up and down stairs, even with arthritis and old age kidney failure – like the energizer bunny, until he just couldn’t. I miss him every day, but also thank him for sharing such a long and happy time with me, from 8 weeks old. My heart goes out to you in sympathy, and I know Sophie knew she had the best owner/friend possible in you and a continued happy life thanks to you. All kitties should be so lucky.

Thank you for opening your home and heart to Sophie. She lived a very special and loved life in her senior years, something many older “special” cats never get to enjoy.

Sophie is at the Rainbow Bridge, happy, healthy, and running through the catnip fields in joy. No more meds, no more shots, no more vets. Her spirit will always be with you, and one day you will meet again.

It’s never easy to lose a special friend, but to celebrate the joy and happiness they’ve brought to you sometimes makes it a little easier. At least for me.

So sorry… I know how it hurts.

  43. 43

I have lost two as an adult Smokey at 21 and Saavik at 17. It does not get easier the second time around. If you believe in reincarnation, be consoled in the fact that next time around you might both be human; or you could possibly be Sophie’s cat, and it will be her turn to take as good care of you as you obviously have, her.

  44. 44

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how it feels to say goodbye to your loved cat as I had to do the same just two months ago.
I send you a big hug and strength to carry on. May Sophie have a peaceful afterlife at the rainbow bridges. You will meet her again when the time comes.

    Dear Kate,

My heart goes out to you and the rest of your kitty (and human) family. I know first hand how devastating losing a great love like Sophie can be. May you find comfort in the fact that you gave her an absolutely incredible life and in knowing that she will always be with you.

Our kitties are truly amazing little creatures and we are blessed to have our lives touched by each and every one of them. I, for one, will be hugging my clan a little tighter today while I remember your Sophie.

Please know that your moderncat family is here for you.

I share with you a poem that comforted me when I lost my companion
May it help ease your pain.

    Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

    Author unknown…

So VERY sorry for your loss. :( It’s never easy to lose a pet/friend and my heart goes out to you. She was lucky to have so much love in her life and you were lucky to have her for so long. I hope that the fond memories of Sophie sustain you, and that you find comfort in those (other kitties) she left behind.

I am so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful kitty. I smile knowing she was loved so much.

Deepest sympathy, I completely understand. It is never enough time.

    Godspeed, Sophie, run free.

Oh Kate – I’m so so sorry. Sophie was so beautiful. What a blessed little beast she was to get to spend her last five years on earth in the company of such a kind animal lover.

I know exactly what you went through – I did it too. There’s nothing like the pain of losing a beloved pet.

I hope your days are filled with some furry distractions for a while so your broken heart can recover.

Thank you for sharing her with us. She’s magnificent.
