Goodbye to My Sweet Sophie

Loss & Memorial

Sophie

Today I had to say goodbye to my sweet kitty Sophie. Sophie was an older cat, probably around 20, I’m not sure. She had only been with me for five years, coming to me after her owner passed away. She was such a tough cookie, fighting kidney failure, feline diabetes, and arthritis. She just kept going and going, and I know she would still be going if her little body hadn’t given out.

This is the first cat that I’ve lost as an adult and I’m just heartbroken. Even though I knew she’d be the first to go, you’re never really prepared to loose one. As you probably can tell, my cats mean the world to me and I cherish every moment I have with them. These little creatures are there every day as part of your life. You build a daily routine with them and when one leaves, there’s a hole.

I know this is what everyone says when someone you love passes away, but this experience is just a reminder to appreciate the time you have with your feline companions. These special little souls are each so unique — they are full of personality and can touch our lives in deep and meaningful ways. Everyone, please go give your kitties a kiss and tell them how much you love them.

there just aren’t words for the heartache – i’ve been there and anyone who has lost a long-time pet has too. thanks for sharing your pictures. i found some comfort in putting together a small (just 4 pics) photo series of my prior cat when she died – put it in a nice pottery barn frame and everyone who comes to my home enjoys it.

get ready for days and days of tears….they are normal! my thoughts are with you.

I send you my condolences,I lost my Precious at 16 yrs old last summer, and indeed ,there is a hole in our space here at home, and in my heart. Her and Pyewacket, her sister traveled from Alaska to Texas with me,and raised 2 of my 3 big dogs… I still feel her in her space in bed sometimes at night… hugs and prayers for you all.

    Good morning Kate,

So sorry to hear about Sophie. Losing a loved one is never easy.

She has surely inspired enough of your work so that she will always be with you…and your fans…in spirit, and that is a wonderful thing!

    See you soon,

    Monika

I am so sorry for your loss. It’s been a few years since I lost a cat, but “heartbreaking” is a totally accurate description of how it felt. In fact, I had to leave work early because I kept crying.
I hope you can find some solace in the facts that she led a long life, and was safe and well-cared for when she passed.

Our deepest sympathies on the loss of Sophie. She was lucky to have not one but 2 loving homes in her time here. Treasure the meories and take comfort in her being free from illness. Big warm hugs from Me and my 18 furbabies.

My deepest condolences for your loss. It is my hope you take considerable comfort in having cared so well for Sophie. For making her remaining time safe, happy and comfortable. Anyone can get a cat. But to “take on” the care of a cat which would have difficulty finding any other home is a valuable gift you gave to her. In time, you will understand more clearly, her love and memory is something which remains with you forever enriching your own life.

there is no solace for losing a being that you love so purely and loved you in the same way. remember always that aside from the necessities, you loved her and were devoted to her for all the days you shared with her. imagine what a world it would be if all living things could have that? what more can any of us ask for? she was a very lucky kitty indeed

I’m so sorry to hear about sweet Sophie’s passing. They do leave a big hole in one’s heart. Here’s to hoping she is in a happy place filled with love, catnip, and lots of stinky food.

Sorry to hear you have to let little Sophie go. My rescues, Peanut Butter and Rolling Stone are still only 4 and 5 years old so they are just babies! They mean the world to me. Having to say good-bye forever would be inconceivable.

At least Sophie will be in Kitty Heaven where she can play with other kitties and eat as much catnip and kitty treats as she wants… :) It’s a happy place! Good-bye little Sophie…

I’m so sad to hear this. She looks like my childhood cat, who also lived a very long life (21) and passed away in my adulthood. You guys are in my thoughts. I’m glad you were in her life. :)

I’m very sorry for your loss Kate. Having lost 2 cats in one year was devastating so I know exactly what you’re going through. Life just doesn’t seem the same. You gave Sophie a loving and safe home for the final years of her life. I know Jake & Micah were at The Bridge to greet her when she arrived. Let the wonderful memories of her replace the sadness in your heart with peace and love.

I am so sorry for your loss. You will carry a piece of her in your heart forever. I lost four cats in two years – my three old ladies (20.5, 19, and 16) and a youngster (1.5 to FIP). I still have dreams with them and I think that is my way of hanging on to them just a little bit longer. They are good dreams.

So sorry to hear about Sophie, your blog just made me fill up a little. She looks beautiful in the pictures and very loved!! I am a Student Veterinary Nurse from England and I have 3 cats with the eldest one turning 13 this year, everyday I feel very lucky to have my little feline troop! You should be very proud of what a wonderful life you gave Sophie, what a fantastic parent you was to her and treasure all of your memories.

I have been following your website for a while now, it’s brilliant and I have recently created my own kitty shelves in the spare room after seeing the DIY stuff you have on here… you and your site are brill!! :o )

    Take care x x

I am so sorry for your loss. I understand the hole that this will leave in your life. 2 years ago we lost our Lizzie. She was 17 and was healthy up until the last 6 months of her life. We now have Badger & Tango both opposite personalities and a joy to have around. I will never stop missing my Lizzie, and have planted Forget-me-not flowers in the garden in her honor (near her ashes). I do appreciate and love my kitties every day – they are my children. I feed them, bathe them (when necessary), brush them, take them to the doctor, just as I did with my own children. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. She was blessed to have you in her life as you were to have her in yours. —-Missy

I am so sorry for your loss. It is heartbreaking when you lose any animal that you love more than anything. I recently lost my Trunks,7 years old. She contracted uterine cancer and after the surgery she passed away that night. I feel your pain and send you good thoughts. Remember the good memories and the fun times you had together.
