Celebrating Earth Day with Close To Naturenow Organic Cat Litter EARTH DAY GIVEAWAY!

Close To Nature Now Biodegradable Bag

The folks at The Organic Farm Store are celebrating Earth Day by announcing their brand new biodegradable packaging! Not only is their Close To Naturenow cat litter organic, now even the packaging is green.

This completely biodegradable natural litter is made from soybean meal and potato starch. It provides excellent odor control, low tracking, and superior clumping. Unlike clay litters — which are devastating to the environment and can cause horrible health problems in cats and kittens (read more here) — Close To Naturenow is a healthy, environmentally-friendly choice for cat litter.

From biodiesel-fueled mobile clinics to facilities built using green design, there are lots of animal shelters worldwide that are going green! The Organic Farm Store has put together a list of some eco-friendly animal shelters in the US and Canada. Check it out, then come back here and leave a comment on this post with info about what your animal shelter is doing to go green, or let us know what you plan to do this year in honor of Earth Day (maybe it’s time to pledge to stop using that clay litter!)

Two winners will be selected in a random drawing on Earth Day, April 22. Each winner will receive an 18 lb. bag of Close To Naturenow Organic Cat Litter in the new biodegradable bag. One entry per person. This giveaway is open to addresses in the US and Canada.

I’m disappointed to not see any Tennessee shelters on their list (yet!). It’s cool that so many are using bio-diesel for fuel – probably the easiest transition if they already use diesel vehicles.

I was especially interested in Tompkins County SPCA – the first registered “green” shelter in the nation – and they’re no kill! “Good for people, good for animals, and good for the planet.”

would LOVE to try a new “green” litter!!!

Great to have another green option in cat litter! And I appreciate the biodegradable bag, too.

  4. 4

    I’d like to try it.

I will definitely stop using clay liter. I use organics in just about everything for myself and I am definitely doing the same for my 3 cats! Would love to try this cat liter!

This year for Earth Day, I will continue using corn-based litter and will use only natural cleaning supplies to clean up my kitty’s messes!

Beif environmentally friendly shouldn’t be a choice, it should be mandatory as all of us have a responsibility towards to the place we call home: Earth. Although higher in cost, I’ve switched from a clay litter to a pine litter. I’m happy that both my cat and I are doing our part together!

we would love to try this new litter!

I would like to try this litter. For Earth Day I will stop using clay litter.

Well, I do not see any locations in Chicago, but I know PAWS is very efficient in aiding the hundreds of strays in our city and has a special cat center. I use natural litter now and my cats are healthy as ever. I attribute the natural litter to their bladder and urinary health.

  13. 13

I try to make every day earth day and do my best to reduce my impact on the environment. We have already switched to non clay litter (and find it is SO much better) I make my own green cleaning products (which I find smell and clean better) and we try to buy vintage furniture when possible to name a few!

  14. 14

I love that it’s even in a biodegradable bag!!! I’ve been looking for trash bags that are the same, no dice yet. :(

i’m loving the biodegradable bag! i’m currently using mews news.

We live in a very rural area with not many stores, but after months and months of many of us whining, one store says it will start to carry an organic litter. Can’t wait!! Would love to win and try this brand.

Never heard of this litter before – We’ve lived “green” for ages now and will continue to do so, including using “green” litter.

I’ll definitely look into Close to Naturenow – thanks for the info

I would love to try an alternative to clay litter!

I don’t think the shelter near my house is doing much in the green program other than a little bit of recycling. They are run by Harris County, but the County has little funding sent their way. There is an effort in progress to help them become more green.

  22. 22

I already use only corn or soy-based litters. Right now I’ve begun trying the “World’s Best” cat litter but I would love to try this and see how they compare! Personally I think the “World’s Best” could be a little less dusty, as other corn-based litters I’ve found are.

I think that most shelters depend on donations and most people think of food before they think of cat litter. I think the companies that make the cat litter should improve their marketing so when people buy their products they are reminded to support their local shelters. Coupon incentives are a good idea. Our local shelter has a free space in the paper for their wish/need list and it works.

I would love to try this. Every day is earth day. I have been picking up trash after the snow melt has uncovered a landfill’s worth. Yuck.

  25. 25

The shelter I work with uses gently used items donated by the community (i.e. newspaper flooring, towels) to save money and the environment! I can’t afford a natural, eco-friendly litter so winning this would be amazing.

I’ve been using “green” litter for ages, I’ve never ever used the clay stuff. This new “green” litter is even better, I will definitely use it from now on, Always hated the plastic bag the old litter came in, so hard to recycle. This Close To Naturenow stuff is great!

  28. 28

I was happy to see Maricopa County Humane Society on the “green” list. However, when I went to the link I could not find anything about their green efforts. In honor of Earth Day I will once again bring up the idea that the condo association I reside in look at the benefits to recycle.

  29. 29

We already use a corn-based litter with the World’s Best Cat Litter, it’s great and I’d love to try a different organic plant-based cat litter. We also only use organic catnip. My husband is a vet and he is totally converted to the Wor;d’s Best and tells all his cat-owner clients about it, so hopefully he has converted quite a few people to usng more sustainable plant-based litters!

About time someone started using biodegradable bags! I’ve never used clay litter with my kitties and never will so we can always stay green. (:

  31. 31

What a great Earth Day promotion!

  32. 32

my local shelter started recycling the pet food cans and paper products. It isn’t much, but it is a start.

  33. 33

I would love to use eco-friendly litter but I have yet to find one that truly controls odor. I will definitly give this brand a try.

  34. 34

Wow, this is great news. I would love to try a “green” litter. Please select me as a winner. I have three wonderful cats would love to give this a try! Thanks!

  35. 35

I absolutely hate clay litter and would LOVE to try this. I’ve been so disappointed in other options and this looks like an excellent solution!

I use something like this called Oko Plus. It is more than great, i love it. When i do not manage to find it my cats are very disappointed because learned what the good qualities means.

  38. 38

My kitties would love to give this a try.

  39. 39

I’m nervous about changing litter for my two cats, but I’m pledging to begin the process on April 25.

  40. 40

Would like to try — going green is very important so
we can help to save our earth

  41. 41

    Looks awesome!
I always try to use earth friendly products whenever I can.

  42. 42

World’s Best and Swheat Scoop are my current favs, but I’m always up to try another type.

  43. 43

    Biodegradable bag – yeah!

Purrfect way to celebrate Earth Day! Anxious to try on my family of 5 cats!

  45. 45

I’ve been trying to move to a better litter box system that’s better for the environment, but have had issues with odor in the past. I recently checked out “Litter Week” as I am newer to the site. I am considering the Smart Cat Box and the Composter, but this product might work as well. I’d definitely give it a try before buying a whole new system.

  46. 46

Would love to try this litter.

Arm & Hammer had a corn based litter in same packaging as this one and I bought 2 to try it. It worked really well and my cat didn’t seem to mind the change, but haven’t seen it a the store since the one time so had to change back.

  47. 47

After my 21 y.o. died I switched to wheat litter, but it tracks a lot. So I’m looking for a biodegradable litter that tracks less.

  48. 48

    thanx for the giveaway

It’s not necessarily in honor of Earth Day but I’ve been spending a lot of time researching the possibility of composting our cat waste/litter. With 5 cats, we contribute a lot to the landfill. I recently had a brainstorm and stopped using plastic bags to dispose of the waste and switched to paper sandwich bags instead. Little steps but I like to think they all add up. Thanks for the giveaway!

I would love to give this a try and no one near me carries this product!
I have 3 boys and always wonder how the products I choose effect their health. Sounds like this would be a great choice!
