The folks at The Organic Farm Store are celebrating Earth Day by announcing their brand new biodegradable packaging! Not only is their Close To Naturenow cat litter organic, now even the packaging is green.
This completely biodegradable natural litter is made from soybean meal and potato starch. It provides excellent odor control, low tracking, and superior clumping. Unlike clay litters — which are devastating to the environment and can cause horrible health problems in cats and kittens (read more here) — Close To Naturenow is a healthy, environmentally-friendly choice for cat litter.
PLEDGE TO GO GREEN AND ENTER TO WIN!
From biodiesel-fueled mobile clinics to facilities built using green design, there are lots of animal shelters worldwide that are going green! The Organic Farm Store has put together a list of some eco-friendly animal shelters in the US and Canada. Check it out, then come back here and leave a comment on this post with info about what your animal shelter is doing to go green, or let us know what you plan to do this year in honor of Earth Day (maybe it’s time to pledge to stop using that clay litter!)
Two winners will be selected in a random drawing on Earth Day, April 22. Each winner will receive an 18 lb. bag of Close To Naturenow Organic Cat Litter in the new biodegradable bag. One entry per person. This giveaway is open to addresses in the US and Canada.

For Earth day I will be saving water and repurposeing discards
April 9th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
Perfect!!! I was looking for “Green” inside and outside. Will defiantly be using it for my 3 cats.

I no longer clean my litter box into a plastic bag and take to the dump. . . I have a trench behind my cabin (in the wilderness) and bury the ‘raw’ litter. . . Works great and slows the coyotes/wolves down a bit!!
April 10th, 2010 at 5:37 am
I bet my cat would like this litter.
April 10th, 2010 at 6:59 am
I have been searching for the perfect “green” litter and this may be it! I would love to try it out.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:09 am
my husband uses the clay litter for his kitties i long ago switched to WBC when i read about the clay litter dust in our kitties lungs.
i had to go out of town and he was on cat sitting duty which included scooping my kitties box he loved how light the litter was and how nice it smelled.
when i came back he said that he wanted to change to the WBC.
so now he has gone green also

I decided to green my cat Dulce’s world too by stop using clay litter…but now I see myself buying a plastic bag that is difficult to recicle, hence I have commenced my seach for a litter that is truelly green (both contents and packaging).

I pledge to plant some wild apple trees- the bloosomw will keep local bees happy and humming.
April 10th, 2010 at 1:12 pm
We are currently using World’s Best Cat Litter and it is working fairly well compared to previous litters. We have never used clay litter. I would love to try Close to Naturenow Organic litter. I appreciate their packaging and will look for more companies that use biodegradable resources. I like to think of everyday as an “Earth Day” and will continue to look for and to use environmentally friendly products for everyday use.
April 10th, 2010 at 3:39 pm
I am always down with making kitty litter as green as possible!
April 10th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
I plan to purchase a rain barrel to save water for Earth Day.
April 10th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
Great way to deal with what every cat person has to do daily (litter), and being concious of the environmental impact! Super!
April 10th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
For Earth Day, I’m going to do the final research on how to build a French Drain along the back of my house to collect all the rainwater into a very big cistern to use to water my fruit trees and veggie garden in the summer.
April 10th, 2010 at 7:15 pm
This litter looks great, I love the biodegradable packaging! I have started trying (believe it or not) chicken feed with baking soda added for cat litter. Just get the kind for baby chicks with no antibiotics or hormones added to it, and it is flushable and biodegradable and clumps pretty well.
April 10th, 2010 at 7:23 pm
will be recycling and buying less
April 11th, 2010 at 5:42 am
I have tried an alternative to clay litter, but my cat refused to use it. Time to try something else. Maybe I’ll have better luck with this.
April 11th, 2010 at 8:50 am
In honor of Earth Day, I plan on going vegetarian for good!
April 11th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
I hope they will expand their distribution soon to include the North Texas area. I look forward to trying this product, always looking for products that help with odor control.
April 11th, 2010 at 3:42 pm
It’s a nice idea in theory; however, biodegradable packaging, trash bags, etc. will not biodegrade unless you bury it in your yard. It’s going to a landfill where more garbage will be piled atop of it, hence not letting it biodegrade at all.
The litter is interesting, though. It looks like Feline Pine Scoop, which was a little dusty, but I think I’ll try it.
April 11th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
I just started using the natural litter a few months ago and am very pleased. I love that this one has gone a step further and even made the bag biodegradable!
April 11th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Since becoming a vegetarian, it seems like I recycle more and more. The next step would be my kitties going green too!
April 11th, 2010 at 6:19 pm
This year, we are planting yet another tree..
April 11th, 2010 at 9:23 pm
I really like this litter so it would be cool to win. (I do wish I could have one of those 10lb buckets – and then use the biodegradable bags as refills.) Alas there is no local distributor otherwise I’d use it a lot more.
April 11th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
I plan to finally kick my plastic water bottle habit once and for all!
April 12th, 2010 at 5:08 am
I plan on using more all natural litter instead of clay.
April 12th, 2010 at 7:57 am
Planting lots more shrubs and flowers!
April 12th, 2010 at 8:33 am
Bring my own bags to stores to use instead of using plastic bags.
April 12th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
I had no idea there were so many environmentally protective items for cast.s
April 12th, 2010 at 3:10 pm
We switched our 5 cats from clay litter to natural litter last year but are still looking for our favorite. We’ve tried wheat & corn but never soy. For Earth Day we will be doing like we do every day – using as many natural, organic, green products as we can both for us & all our furkids!
April 12th, 2010 at 9:30 pm
We plant a tree for Earth Day.
April 13th, 2010 at 8:23 am
I’ve tried corn litter before but went back to clay because I found it has better odour control. Maybe this one is a better alternative.
April 13th, 2010 at 11:04 am
Great! We are looking for something which can replace World’s Best Litter. Hope this works.
April 13th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
I’m trying out several brands of natural litter.. Ones that I’ve tried are quite decent, but haven’t met my (or my cat’s) perfect match. Hope this will work.
April 14th, 2010 at 2:20 am
Wow, when they say 100% recyclable, they mean 100%!
April 14th, 2010 at 7:07 am
For Earth Day, I’m going to try a more earth and feline friendly cate litter. Would love to try your brand but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anyone handling this in NYS. If I was able to try it and like it, I would try to promote use in our area.
April 14th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Thanks for the contest opportunity. My kitties would love to try out this litter!
April 15th, 2010 at 7:23 am
Will have to check the next time I am in one of the pet stores to see if they carry this. I know that I haven’t seen it in any of the mass merchandisers.
April 15th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
I love the biodegradable packaging.
April 16th, 2010 at 3:46 am
I stopped using clay litters because they are stripped mined
April 16th, 2010 at 8:30 am
This is such a great idea and I like the idea it is safer than others for us, the world and especially the cats. susan Leech
April 16th, 2010 at 10:47 am
We are planting a few native trees around our yard, and are phasing out the non-native trees over the next few years.
April 16th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
I would love to give it a try….with 7 cats, I have experimented with most litter trying to find one that the cats like and is eco-friendly!
April 16th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Honestly, I’m not sure what the shelter is doing here.
I’ve been using wheat litter for the past while. As an environmentalist, cat-lover, and girl that strives for social-responsibility, hearing about this product is just super duper.
For Earth Day, I’m learning how to take city transit! I moved into the city a couple years ago just about and still fear our public transit. I’m going to conquer my fears and cancel my car registration! Woohoo!
April 17th, 2010 at 6:04 am
My shelter has a place to drop off cans that helps going green and helps out our no kill shelter.
April 17th, 2010 at 9:45 pm
would love to transition to a non-clay based litter, have tried the corn but no luck – hopefully this one works!
April 17th, 2010 at 10:24 pm
For Earth Day, I plan to stop using plastic grocery bags
April 18th, 2010 at 6:06 am
We just started vermiculturing (very exciting). We try to recycle and compost everything we can.
April 18th, 2010 at 10:16 am
I am going to start using green cleaning products and hope to try out this litter to see if our cat likes it.
April 18th, 2010 at 10:20 am
Great giveaway for Earth Day! Thanks!!
