If you want to be really green this Earth Day, you could try toilet training your cat and kicking the litter habit altogether! I still have yet to try this, but I’ve read so many testimonials saying that it’s the best thing ever, I have to see if it works.
One of the best resources out there for helping you teach your cats how to use the toilet is Kick Litter, the entertaining little guidebook from Moxie and Cooper who both kicked litter themselves. The book comes with a free poster outlining the easy-to-follow “nine step intervention program” for toilet training your cat.
. . .
Note: Toilet training cats can be controversial because some research has shown that there may be a link between a parasite sometimes found in cat feces and harm being caused to sea otters on the West coast of the US. However, further research shows that if you are able to verify that your cat does not have the parasite, that flushing cat feces is not a problem. For more info, please read this post.

Hah! I would love it if I could train my cats to do this. Less scooping, and I wouldn’t have to buy litter

We’re working on it with Litter Kwitter and lots of patience. It’s going well so far. Have to progress at their pace. It might not be for every cat, but you can’t know unless you try. Looking forward to traveling w/o the litter box!

this is so funny i was just talking to my boyfriend about toilet training my cats last night.. My one cat goes pee in the tub sometimes.. and he does it almost right over the drain. that would be pretty great to not deal with the litter box anymore!

I tried to toilet train my two cats for several months and was unsuccessful. One thing for sure if you only have one washroom in your home it is going to be messy and difficult. I used the Litter Kwitter system and did everything possible, one cat seemed to be picking up on the idea and the other didn’t. It’s a wonderful concept. I think if you are getting your first cat and it didn’t know anything else in her new home she would probably pick it up. Good luck to all who are successful!

Tried this with my young cat for several months. She seemed to get the hang of the #1, but when the #2′s hit the water and splashed her, she gave up! And then I gave up. Can’t really blame her! Good luck to everyone else!
