If you want to be really green this Earth Day, you could try toilet training your cat and kicking the litter habit altogether! I still have yet to try this, but I’ve read so many testimonials saying that it’s the best thing ever, I have to see if it works.
One of the best resources out there for helping you teach your cats how to use the toilet is Kick Litter, the entertaining little guidebook from Moxie and Cooper who both kicked litter themselves. The book comes with a free poster outlining the easy-to-follow “nine step intervention program” for toilet training your cat.
. . .
Note: Toilet training cats can be controversial because some research has shown that there may be a link between a parasite sometimes found in cat feces and harm being caused to sea otters on the West coast of the US. However, further research shows that if you are able to verify that your cat does not have the parasite, that flushing cat feces is not a problem. For more info, please read this post.

We have enough copies of Kick Litter for nine lucky winners, one for each of the nine-steps! Been meaning to try this.

Oh, the money I could save with not buying litter for 5 cats…
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:30 am
I would love to give this a try.

Toilet training is one of the WORST things for cats. First, it doesn’t take into account their natural need to bury their waste. Second, the litter box is one of the first places many health issues will show up. Second, if the cat falls in, it is then covered in waste. The stance a cat has to take is also unnatural.
Toilet training a cat is all for the human’s convenience, and does nothing for the cat.

This would be an interesting project. I have four cats- two seem intersted in the flushing toilet -they put two paws up on the edge when i flush poop from the litter box.
I suspect it requires consistency and following the methods closely…
I would love to try it but the multiple cat issue makes me wonder…..

I would like to try this!!

I quite agree with E on all the points. Plus another thing to take into consideration – geriatric cats. My 19-year-old cat wouldn’t be able to leap up to the bowl with her arthritis now.

I’ve been thinking of training my kitty to not use her litter box anymore, because she tracks a lot and I have to sweep after her daily. -__-” This post is so timely, and I hope I can try this method on her. Joy to the everyone in the household if we succeed!

Even corn-based litter costs a lot and is unnecessary if our cats could share the toilet!
Before doing this, we’re going to get our two cats tested for the sea otter death parasite, but if our cats are otter-murder-free, we’ll definitely go for it!

I have always wanted to try this, and I’m curious to see how my 3 cats would respond to it. I’d love to have this little guidebook!
April 23rd, 2010 at 10:16 am
I have to say I am very curious about this. I wonder how old your cat has to be.
April 23rd, 2010 at 10:24 am
I NEED THIS!! I NEED THIS!! I NEED THIS!!!
LOL.
I see this as the ultimate challenge and more money in my pocket! HUGE PLUS for Mother Earth as well!
My cat, is always drinking out of the toilet or sitting on it when the lid is down.
I wonder if this makes him a good candidate….
I’ve been wanting to try this for so long!

I tend to agree with post #455 that this concept sounds good to some humans, but is of no benefit to cats – plus flushing their waste products can be harmful to marine life (in particular sea otters.)

I Would love to try this, but I am dubious to any of my cats complying with mommys wishes.

My girlfriend and I have been discussing the dream of training my cat to use the toilet… freeing us from the litter scattered across the floor!

Curious to read it and try it

We moved to a new house a year ago. I designed my bathroom so that it would have two toilets, one for the people and the other for my cat.
I was really hoping that the product I purchased at that time would work well and my cat would learn in no time. After trying for 6 months or so, i had actually given up on that and went back to the litter box mess but, still hoping that I can teach him to use it somehow someday.

April 23rd, 2010 at 5:55 pm
I LOVE this idea. I’ve been wanting to try it myself!!! I feel so guilty about the litter box waste!
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:07 pm
We would love to teach our cat to do this-it would definitely cut down on litter cost and waste!
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:13 pm
does this really work
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:32 pm
This is too cool, I love the idea that this all comes in a package!
April 24th, 2010 at 12:12 am
I would love to try this. I’ve seen dogs that were toilet trained, but never a cat.
April 24th, 2010 at 5:42 am
I would love to try this! I have 5 cats currently, and that makes for a lot of scooping! I use WBCL, which is pretty expensive, so it would save me a lot of time and money. To those who say it’s “unnatural”, we all know how strong minded and strong willed cats are. You can’t really get them to do anything they don’t want to, so, my thought is that, if they adapt to this new behavior, they must not really have a problem with it. If they did, they simply would not do it!
April 24th, 2010 at 6:59 am
This sounds like a fantastic idea! I’d love to be able to attempt to teach my cats how to do this!
April 24th, 2010 at 9:05 am
with 3 cats…this is the way to go
April 24th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
This is cool!
April 24th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

I would love to take this on. I’ll even send you guys pics of the results!!!
April 24th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
I tried a method of my own, but it didn’t work. I’d love to try something proven.
April 24th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
This looks like the cutest potty training for cats guide ever! I must teach my kitty to use the toilet, I think she wants to!
April 24th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
It was be awesome and radical if all 3 of my cats could be toilet trained! Wow.
April 24th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
Hmm… Although now that I’ve read about the cons of toilet training, now I’m not so sure about this.
April 24th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

April 25th, 2010 at 6:30 am
Anything to save money and the environment! Even though I’ve read things about cat poop in the water systems doing damage to wildlife.

I have tried to toilet train one of my cats; however, it was unsuccessful because he did not know what to do when I added water to the bowl. I have always wanted to try it again.
