Kick Litter For Earth Day!

Kick Litter

If you want to be really green this Earth Day, you could try toilet training your cat and kicking the litter habit altogether! I still have yet to try this, but I’ve read so many testimonials saying that it’s the best thing ever, I have to see if it works.

One of the best resources out there for helping you teach your cats how to use the toilet is Kick Litter, the entertaining little guidebook from Moxie and Cooper who both kicked litter themselves. The book comes with a free poster outlining the easy-to-follow “nine step intervention program” for toilet training your cat.

. . .

Note: Toilet training cats can be controversial because some research has shown that there may be a link between a parasite sometimes found in cat feces and harm being caused to sea otters on the West coast of the US. However, further research shows that if you are able to verify that your cat does not have the parasite, that flushing cat feces is not a problem. For more info, please read this post.

Well, I’m willing to give it a shot!

  2. 302

I hope this book has good techniques for extra stubborn cats!

  3. 303

No litter – that would be amazing!!

  4. 304

I wonder if all 3 kitties would go for this… hmmm :)

  5. 305

Save the Earth and save me money! Sounds great to me! ^_^

  6. 306

This sounds like an awesome idea! No more litter tracked all over! No more dust!

  7. 307

This is so sweet! I’m pretty sure my cat would be so stoked to learn how to use the toilet!

  8. 308

This would be great in my tiny apartment… I’m not sure it’s possible but I think it’d be worth a try!

  9. 309

i would love to teach my little indie kitty how to use the toilet, in our 150 square ft apartment anything that can minimize the scent of cat “business” is imperative.

Having a bad back, a chance to no longer carry litter up two flights of stairs would be fantastic. I am positive Sir could learn this, bit worried about Sky though, but maybe I could appeal to her vanity! ;-)

  11. 311

I’ve been trying to train my girl to kick litter and if you would learn to associate the loo as a loo and not as a giant drinking fountain would be wonderful :D

  12. 312

Sorry, I was talking to her as I wrote my comment: I meant if she would learn to associate not you :)

  13. 313

    cute book!

  14. 314

I would love to try this. It would save on our kitty bills and help the earth at the same time!

  15. 315

My teen would love if our cats were trained, since he’s the one who deals with the litter! ;0

I’d love to train my cats to do that. They watch me assiduously, so I’m absolutely certain that they could do it ;-)

Would love to read about toilet training my cats, but not so sure the older kitty I have will be too into it. But the more I read about cat litter and the environment, the more appealing it sounds. And let’s face it, who likes to deal with a litter box.

  18. 318

It would be nice if my cat used the toilet, so I wouldn’t have to scoop the litter box… but I’m not sure that I’d want to use the toilet after the cat did…

  19. 319

Very interesting. Now this ideal takes potty training to a higher level.

  20. 320

look at that cute little kittie in the picture.

  21. 321

Of my 4 cats I think Bunnie Cat would try this on the new toilet that is being installed as I type!

  22. 322

This is a fascinating idea. My cats already act like little furry people. Would be fun to try!

  23. 323

Now if we could just teach them to flush. Once. Anyone see the Youtube video with owners trying to figure out why their water bill was so high ? BEG

  24. 324

I’d love to see if I can get this to work.

  25. 325

Kitteht has a stinky monkey on her back – we’d love to have her kick the litter habit!

  26. 326

I love the idea of kicking kitty litter! It would give me room for another book shelf in my home office.

  27. 327

It would be great if I could get ALL FOUR of my cats to participate, but they may all be on the cusp of using the toilet, they all crowd around when its being flushed…hmmm…..;0)

  28. 328

My kitty taught herself how to use the toilet (no joke!) but then we moved and now she doesn’t use it. :( It was the coolest thing ever, would love to know how to re-train her!

Eli says, “I’m smart! I can do that!” Thanks for the offering.

  30. 330

Love to try another way for my kits to kick the litterbox. Tried one method before, but my darlings had other things on their minds than we did. Now we have a different toilet bowl and the two of them are a bit older so I think we’re all up for a new try…

  31. 331

Would save so much time sweeping up litter trails!

  32. 332

My cat has learned so many things, how to open cabinets, doors, even just the other day how to open a sliding glass door, he’s a cunning little boy, i think he could be taught to use the toilet as well, it would be amazing!

This is the answer to every cat lover’s prayer. And Scottie and Jake are eager to show off their brilliance and dedication by learning this new skill.

  34. 334

I would love to get rid of the litterbox!

  35. 335
    Kim I

I would love to train my two kitty’s to use the toilet!

    pipa loves batik

I neeed to start this again, Pipa lost momentum…

  37. 337

Toffee so needs to be trained so Twinkle or Fatboy do not need to cover s**t after her…

  38. 338

i already have a toilet trained cat so i don’t need this but wanted to contribute to the conversation: for those of you who are worried about your cats playing in the water, keep a water bottle filled with vinegar (white – we get it cheap by the gallon) by the toilet and squirt a little vinegar in the toilet after you flush – cats hate it and my cat won’t touch the water when it has vinegar in it (before we tried this, we were at a loss, he loved splashing his paws in the water for fun – though thank god he never did it while there was any waste in the toilet, only after it was flushed and “clean”). someone suggested this trick when i posed on a toilet training forum (yes such things exist). but someone else said, “is playing in the “clean” toilet water really that much worse than the cats pawing around in a used litter box anyway?” so either way it may still be better than using a litterbox, but the vinegar trick should take care of any splashing tendencies. in case you’re wondering, buying gallons of white vinegar is still cheaper than buying litter. added bonus to using vinegar, it keeps the toilet bowl sparkling clean :)

  39. 339

I would be interested in learning if my 2 babies could be trained.

  40. 340

forgot to add – there are many cats who learn to use the lever to flush too – just do a youtube search for them. apparently it’s also very easy to teach them to flush (much easier than toilet training itself). problem is, often, once they learn, they just flush ALL DAY LONG for the fun of watching the water swirl. that’s a HUGE waste of water (probably defeats any environmental benefit from teaching your cat to use the toilet in the first place). i chose not to train my cat to flush b/c i decided i’d stop while i was ahead with training him to use the toilet.

  41. 341

My cat mini mooncat is a bit silly, falls off roofs, doesn’t move away from growling dogs and is afraid of spiders. If this book succeeds in getting her to use the loo instead of litter trays then it will work for any cat. I look forward to giving it a go.

  42. 342

I’ve got just the bathroom to dedicate to the kittehs – stop the dust!

  43. 343

Can I teach old cats new tricks? I’d love to have Catsby and Chester using the toilet!

  44. 344

I would love to not have to clean litter every day!

  45. 345

i would love to toilet train my kitty!

My mother’s cousin told me years ago about a cat he and his wife had who used the toilet. They never trained him–he figured it out on his own. But, as the cousin said, if only they could have taught him to flush. I’d gladly settle for flushing for my three girls if they’d only use the toilet (hopefully without falling in). Would love this book to help me try.
