I’ve very excited to share this new item from Moderncat Studio. It is my personal favorite, because I came up with the concept last year while attending Modernism Week in Palm Springs. I took the idea to the team at Juggernaut Design and they made it a reality. Introducing the Palm Springs Lounge, a two-story ultra mod cat bed for cats and cat owners with a passion for mid-century modern design. So what was my inspiration for designing this bed? Answer: “What if Trina Turk had a cat?” (and she might, I’m not sure.)

The Palm Springs Lounge is constructed of glossy white powder coated steel and birch plywood. Four adjustable feet on the bottom allow the bed to float slightly off the floor, plus the feet let you level the bed on uneven surfaces. The architectural block pattern coordinates beautifully with mid-century design, and works equally well in a modern interior.
The two-story design provides kitty with different options for lounging: the upper story offers a view of the world, while the lower section creates a cozy hideaway. In a multi-cat household, two cats can even share.

Two luxurious cushions come with removable, washable cushion covers in a variety of top-quality designer fabrics. We are also happy to accommodate special requests for specific fabric colors and patterns to match your decor. Please send an email to me at kate [at] moderncat [dot] net for more details. The bed measures 19″ tall and 16″ in diameter. Cushions are 3″ thick.

You can see the current fabric selections in the Moderncat Studio Etsy shop. The Palm Springs Lounge is $295 plus shipping. Please keep in mind that we only made 12. We can make more if there is a demand. All parts are made and hand assembled in Phoenix, Arizona including the cushion covers which are the highest quality. Plus, don’t forget that 5% of your purchase from Moderncat Studio always goes to our Cat Charity of the Month. This month the charity is Cactus Cats Rescue.

Trina Turk would totally have this bed! Well done!

I absolutely LOVE this, however the cost is just beyond my means. I do wish ModernCat would post about more reasonably priced items.
The expensive ones are gorgeous to be sure, just not something an average person can afford.

I think this is charming though I’m not sure about the decision to leave the round platform pieces unpainted while the side pieces are white. I think (presuming that you used some sort of kitty-safe paint or stain) that it should be all one color which would make it more coherent looking. Small thing, in any case I love it.
To the person upthread who wants a side-table slash cat bed I would think that just removing the top pillow would produce that; though if your cat is anything like mine I doubt that she will be able to resist jumping up on it anyway.

Gorgeous! Looks like the wall outside the Parker, love it!
$295 is reasonable considering it’s made in the U.S. and not China. The side table idea is a good one too!

@AnnaZed The decision to leave the plywood exposed is a reference to mid-century modern design, in which plywood was a commonly used material. I like the idea for making it all white, too. Maybe we’ll try that on the next round!

I love this bed, too! It looks awesome!!

This looks lovely. I especially like the flock patterned cushions and the idea of attaching it to the wall.
I wish we had such modern, interesting cat stuff in the UK.

I love this piece – it is so good looking and the fabric options are fabulous. I am interested in the size as to how it would fit my 17 lb. beast. No doubt he would make himself fit, but it would be curious.
I also love Tamar’s idea of making it a side table – which I think could easily be done buy adding a top to go over it.
How do you decide which Cat Rescue to sponsor? I would like to suggest Merlin’s Hope – a Ragdoll and Maine Coon Rescue, if you are ever looking for new rescues to sponsor.
Congrats, Kate! I love it!

very cute but dont think my BIG girl would fit!

Attractive, functional, very cool!!

This would match my West Elm day bed, and the chocolate and aqua cushions would go with the thomaspaul pillows that adorn it.

LOVE it! Would it fit my cat? He weighs 17 pounds and most cat furniture is too small for him. He’s on a diet, but he is big boned and will always be huge.

Love it, but can’t buy anything made in Arizona due to the state’s discriminatory immigration laws. Sorry.

These are amazing! I want to move now so I have the space for one of these! NYC living… grrrrr….
March 8th, 2011 at 11:02 am
Gorgeous! And big enough for my big guy kitty, too. Very inspiring!

I’ve been intrigued ever since I saw your “teaser” photo featuring one of these — very nice! Like Bev, it’s out of my price range, but I really think it’s chic.
March 8th, 2011 at 11:48 am
Oh wow. I love these. But I’m with Bev and Melanie; I just can’t swing that price. Beautiful, though!
March 8th, 2011 at 12:01 pm
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! Drooooool. Though I’m with Melanie C — if it were $150 (or if I played the lotto successfully), I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Have to ask though: did the kitties really like the lounge or were they lured by catnip? It’s Murphy’s Law with my cats that they prefer the plain cardboard box to the pricier cat furniture made just for them.

I would love to have one of these, love the design. I personally like the look of the birch with the white.

Wat is dit leuk zo kan ze lekker slapen en geen kattenkwaad uithalen!
Ook leuk voor de logee-kat kan die ook erin slapen.
Het is een duo-bed.
March 9th, 2011 at 10:01 am
Gosh! This is a beauty and love the fabrics too! Poppet would definitely claim the bottom bed, congratulations this is going to be a real winner!

I would love to have one of these, and I hope you will make more of them in the future. Hopefully I will have more money by then.
May 15th, 2012 at 9:46 pm
I am absolutely loving these beds, they would match my living room perfectly! I can’t possibly resist, did someone actually mention that they won’t purchase anything made in the entire state of Arizona due to the state’s discriminatory immigration laws? Seriously?

OMG these are awesome! I am sure my cat would love them, but like others I think they are a bit pricey…..but they are gorgeous!
