Belgian designer Corentin Dombrecht obviously paid close attention to cat behavior when he created this modular bookshelf that accommodates both books and cats. The system is based on three different modules and, depending on how you stack them, you can create little stairways for kitty to climb among the books all the way to the top where there is a built-in cat bed. Brilliant!

The stairway can run along the front of the bookshelf or it can be hidden behind the books against the wall. There are two styles of bed on the top: raised or sunken.

It looks like this is just a design concept that isn’t available for sale anywhere yet, but I think it’s a terrific idea! Check out the video below to see the Cat Library in action (if you can’t see the video below in your email, click here to watch it on the site.)

That’s so cool! My cats go through an obstacle course to get to a high spot on our bookshelves – knocking down a few things, of course. This is a great design!

I’ve seen this before but can’t seem to find a price no matter where I look….

This is (or these are?) great – I’d love to have a set. Now, thanks to Modern Cat, I have an entire folder of book marks full of things I’d love to buy for my cat if I ever win the lottery. In, fact, if I ever do, I think the only furniture I’ll have in my house might be cat furniture (and a chair so I can make a lap, of course!)

This system is fantastic! I am hoping this becomes available. I know exactly where I would put it in my home. Ms. Caity Sunshine and Mr. Frisky Business would love this thing. As it is, they’re in our book cases tossing things off the top shelf so that they can have the top shelf to themselves!
March 27th, 2011 at 1:32 pm
Oh my gosh, I need one of those! No, wait, two – I need two, definitely. Very cool.
March 27th, 2011 at 2:38 pm
It’s said — paraphrasing badly — that two of the refuges from the miseries of life are music and cats. To that, I’d definitely add reading material (and beautifully designed furniture) — and this is amazing. How we would love this system, but with many beds!

Hi folks,
The Cat-Library will be available in Europe and the US by May. Two versions: “deluxe” (cubes are already made) and “kit” (you build the cubes)
March 27th, 2011 at 2:49 pm
Really awesome furniture. I think I’d like one for our home and tom.
March 27th, 2011 at 3:02 pm
I LOVE THIS! I want one too! In fact, with this concept, you could structure a regular entertainment system. Great idea!
March 27th, 2011 at 3:38 pm
I love this idea! I have been looking for a book shelf my cats can enjoy without knocking all the books down – this is the perfect solution.
March 27th, 2011 at 3:41 pm
Noooo way! My cat likes to shred books. God forbid I leave so much as a piece of paper where he can get to it
March 27th, 2011 at 3:43 pm
Wow! This is terrific!
March 27th, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Wow, form and function meet the cat! My kitties wish we had one.
March 27th, 2011 at 9:38 pm
OMG – this is a fantastic feat of engineering genius. The design is so simple, yet appears so complex. Please let us know when these are available. My husband said he would make one, but I think it will be into the next century before I see it (he, he, he).
March 27th, 2011 at 9:58 pm
wow! My cats would really love this.
March 28th, 2011 at 1:11 am
Please let us know when they are actually available to buy (in the UK) -I want one!! Also, do they come in other colours?
March 28th, 2011 at 2:19 am

March 28th, 2011 at 6:32 am

March 28th, 2011 at 9:22 am

March 28th, 2011 at 10:00 am
Wow, what a fantastic creation!
March 28th, 2011 at 10:14 am
What a cool idea!!~
March 28th, 2011 at 11:45 am
We’re talking about building something like this! I’m tired of the same old cat trees and want a place where my cats can hide or sleep. What better way to do that than building it to make it kitty AND people functional, too!
March 28th, 2011 at 12:21 pm
This is really cool, and we have plenty of books and cats in our house. What a great idea.
March 28th, 2011 at 3:03 pm
i LOVE this. must have.
March 28th, 2011 at 5:37 pm
Do not order from this company. You buy one get one free but you pay $7.99 each for shipping and handling for a total of $35.97 and they have a no cancelation policy! Very mis-leading!
March 28th, 2011 at 9:09 pm
What!!??? A product that appeals purr-fectly to my need for both bookshelves (I’m a bookaholic, I confess)and kitty runs/perches (I live in a 700 SF condo.) I NEED this product for my little Zsa Zsa!
March 28th, 2011 at 11:23 pm
Finally, something functional, that would look good in my home, and at the sametime would give fun to my 4 Persian cats.
I hope it comes to the market soon!
