Here is a very special little cat sanctuary in Pasadena, CA. It’s the Cat Cottage Senior Sanctuary, created to provide a loving environment for elderly and special needs kitties. The space itself is a tiny cottage, with lots of windows and an outdoor enclosure overlooking a garden, a skylight, a huge comfy chair, and a loft with a window seat. There are lots of high spots for kitties to nap. There is a handmade kitty stairway leading from the ground to the loft, as well as catwalks surrounding the perimeter walls. The Cottage has air conditioning, heat, a vaulted ceiling with a dimmable chandelier, and classical music playing softly at all times. What a perfect environment for these special senior kitties!

The Cat Cottage was built to be a sort of “exclusive retirement village” for elderly and special needs kitties that nobody wanted to adopt because they were considered too old, unhealthy, or personality challenged. This is unfairly so often the case with senior cats who all deserve to spend their golden years in loving homes.

The Cat Cottage is not accepting any new residents at this time, but you can follow them on Facebook to see the beautiful senior cats in their care, as well as listings for senior cats that are available for adoption. Next time you’re thinking of adding another furry family member, please consider adopting a senior cat!

What a great place for older kitties! I love that they have a safe outdoor area.

This is by far the greatest place for senior cats I’ve seen in a long time. Seniors get left behind so often which is so sad because they are awesome!! Rescues like the one I volunteer with have so many because it’s harder to help people understand how much life they still have left. Great job!!

How lovely that someone is taking in these special cats, and such a beautiful place for them to spend their golden years.

This looks lovely. It’s so good to see someone caring for cats that would otherwise be neglected. I just recently lost my 19 year old, and looking at this made me wonder about the stairs and ledges. As a very senior cat , he became a lot less coordinated, and I had to revamp our house so that he had wide ramps to use and ways to reach sunning spots that he couldn’t safely jump to anymore. I’d be a little worried about senior cats falling from that stairway or the catwalks. I never used to think about it before, but I wonder if anyone has made special “senior” cat trees or catwalks with rails, say?

I wanted to do something like that outside caged in area for bmy guys,so they could go outside, nut be safe.
Lovely!
Those inside 3 level cages are from Leith Pet Werks ,if I’m not mistaken.
They’re made for bunnies specifically, but can easily be used for other small animals.
I’m just ordering a tri level from them for my 3 Buns.

LOVELY place, beautiful cats, and wonderful article, Kate — thank you for turning me on to a jewel in the community next door to ours, that I didn’t even know existed. Spent a lot of time touring their facebook page just now, and gave moderncat.net props (I remembered this time
)

I think they live better than I do! Lucky kitties!

This is the greatest. How do build one to help the older kitties in the rescue organization I volunteer for? It warms my heart to see the older cats still loved.

Have you guys seen http://www.tabbysplace.org/ ? (Maybe it’s been mentioned on here, I don’t remember). But it’s another awesome place that takes care of sick and elderly cats who have nowhere else to go. We need more places like that.

I would love to win this for my friends next door! Their kitties keep running out so it would be nice to give them this gift so they would know where they are and they could let them outside without worry!

This is past fantastic. This is the kind of structure I have dreamed of for the guys and gals I rescued. I am currently modifying an outdoor enclosure where the 4 ferals can live comfortably and quietly without running every time I walk into the room. I would love to get more information on how the modifications were made on the outdoor building. It looks like it started off as one of the basic garden sheds you would buy at Lowes, Costco or Home Depot.
To Lilla #12: Cathouse on the Kings (No. CA) is a place to consider also.
