There’s a new player in the modern cat furniture world and so far I love what I see. PDL Cat designs handcrafted modern cat furnishings, and they just launched with a collection of gorgeous eco-friendly scratchers. These beauties are made with sustainable bamboo plywood and hand finished with natural oil. The scratching surface is all natural sisal rope and each scratcher design has rubber feet to grip hard floors. The scratchers ship flat and fit together quickly and easily with high-quality European connecting hardware. These are truly quality pieces that are designed to last and look beautiful in your home.

There are currently four designs: the Washboard, for kitties who like a horizontal scratching surface; the Feline Incline for angled scratching; the Pylon measuring 31 inches tall; and at 36 inches tall, the ultimate sctatcher, the Obelisk.

We were lucky enough to test the Pylon and it is a new favorite in the Moderncat household. As you can see, Ando not only loves to scratch on the sisal rope, but he enjoys sitting on the large and sturdy base, like a little stage. I love the bamboo plywood and the details of these pieces are very architectural.

The new PDL Cat scratchers are available from the PDL Cat Etsy shop. Prices range from $90 to $320. All of the PDL Cat products are handcrafted in Phoenix, Arizona. I’m really looking forward to seeing what other designs they create in the future.

I think my parents should surprise me with the Feline Incline!

I wonder about the strength of these especially the obelisk. My sister in law has two huge kittens (Maine Coon 18 & 19 lbs at one year and still growing) that have destroyed every scratcher they have tried. Suggestions welcome.

These are some of the sturdiest and most durable scratchers that we’ve come across, I’m really impressed. They are heavy enough to keep them from tipping and the sisal rope is holding up really well to regular scratching from all the cats. I believe that PDL Cat might be offering a service to re-wrap your scratcher with new rope once it is worn, which would save quite a bit of money and extend the life of the scratcher indefinitely. I’ll be sure to post when I get the details.

My 17th birthday is on October 17th. My parents know that the best presents to get me are actually presents for my cat. Hello, wish list.

Love these — the Obelisk is the favorite, and it looks sturdy enough for big Maine Coon kittens, even our Sammi, who’s 17 and still very playful.

Snuffle is long kitty and know he would enjoy a tall scratcher that would not fall over.

These are beautiful! I love the obelisk and the other tall, flat one. I looove the shape of the bases.

Thanks for all the comments. To Modern Cat’s post number 17, I do indeed have plans to offer a re-wind service. The bamboo plywood will last a very long time, but of course the sisal rope, like any other scratching surface, will wear with use. Even with shipping back and forth re-winding should be significantly less expensive than buying new.
