French designer Sinan Sigic of Atelier Hapax creates one-of-a-kind objects using recycled materials. This unique cat tree is made from an old lamp base wrapped with 444 meters of sisal rope. The base and shelf were added to give the cats a place to perch. Brilliant! I’m hitting the thrift stores this weekend to see what I can find for making something similar.

I’d love to see other creative ideas you might have for re-purposing objects to make beautiful cat-friendly pieces.

Thanks to Jaime from Design-Milk for passing this one along.

That’s a heck of a lot of rope! And wrapping! Very cool.

This was a great idea, and the photos are superb.
This morning my cat Twix has completely convinced me that it was a cat owner who invented the breadbox. I wonder what ancient artifact was once repurposed to protect the bread from their fangs?

For those of us who may try to make something similar, is there any information on how was the shelf was affixed?

Just goes to show us that creativity knows no bounds where cat lovers are concerned! Very nice.

I took a old chest of drawers and turned it in to a cat bed with storage in bottom drawer. Here is a link to pictures

Yes, I agree, lots of wrapping: dedication to arts and cats needed! My crew would have not appreciated the artistic end. Most likely, they would have knocked it down in record time to create a horizontal post. A Happening?

Very neat – looks like fun for the cats and people alike! My question is: where do youg get 444m of non-oily sisal rope? I can’t even find a good source for a small package, let alone a large coil. I apparently don’t have the right terms for web searches, the sisal ropes carried by the hardware stores all stink, and the local pet supply stores don’t carry any.

I’d love to do this on a piece of furnture, but does anyone know of what kind of glue would be cat safe? I don’t think regular glue is good for them (they could lick their paws, etc.)
