Litter & Hygiene

Everyone has been asking where to purchase the fabulous Purr & Simple nut shell litter I wrote about last year. Well, lucky for us, Blue Buffalo bought Purr & Simple and is now making the same nut shell litter available under the brand Blue Naturally Fresh.

It’s the exact same litter as Purr & Simple, so if you loved P&S, this is great news! They still offer the regular clumping, multi-cat clumping, and the pellet formulas. It’s available in several different size bags at Petsmart and Petco or online through Amazon.

I switched to the pellets and was previously using crystals. I would not recommend the pellets as they turn into a dirt like consistency and creates a lot of dust.

Does anybody know if this litter is flushable?

  3. 3

I’d try it if it were unscented. I thought I remembered this Purr and Simple being totally unscented.

Wow, yet another litter option! With all the choices, it should be easy to please any and every cat ;)

Haven’t had too much luck with organic type litters, wheat, corn, maybe this one is different specially if it is unscented.

We have four cats and we’ve been using the Blue Buffalo walnut shell litter for about three months now. I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s unscented. It lasts a lot longer than any other litter we’ve ever tried. It clumps really well. Every time I scoop the boxes I literally say out loud, “I can’t believe how much I love this litter.” Which I know is weird of me to admit, but if you’ve ever had to scoop terrible litter that smells like an evil combination of cat urine and lemon Pledge and doesn’t clump well, then switch to the BB and you’ll understand. It’s good stuff, man.

Blue Buffalo always makes great products

I recently started using this also. I have 2 cats in a 620sq ft apartment so there’s not a lot of space for “forgiving smells”. I was using the Tidy Cat small spaces, which was VERY good. I only switched to the BB because it’s what I feed my cats and I was interested in trying an all natural litter. It took a couple days for them to get used to it, but I love it.I have none of those problems any longer. I have it in both litter boxes and I swear they use it more than before lol. It is expensive, but it is totally worth it to me!

Thanks for the endorsements; it really helps to hear from cat lovers who use it. I want to try it, sure my cats would like it too, lol.

I find this as good as world’s best and it is flushable

I’ve been using the walnut litter for a month with good results. One of my cats has allergies, and I’ve been looking for a litter that doesn’t irritate her skin or send up dust clouds. The walnut litter took a little getting used to, and the older cats don’t like it at all unless it is mixed with clay litter, but Koa is happy with it.

I’ve been using Purr and Simple for a year or so, tried the Naturally Fresh once. The Purr and Simple was much fresher, because it was made and distributed by the manufacturer and shipped/handled less. Blue Buffalo hiked up the price astronomically and I honestly don’t think I will continue buying this litter.

It does still have some dust which can and has caused some ear problems for our kitty, i.e. yeast/ear infection. Sure it clumps well and I have never used a litter with better odor control, but I don’t believe it to be worth the money anymore. Just my two cents.

Oh and the clumps break apart really easily, so if your kitty steps on a buried clump, or if you miss the clump and only scoop up half of it, they will break apart and make scooping very inconvenient.

I was excited to see blue buffalo make a litter. They make great cat& dog food. I love this litter, I’ve been using it for a few months and it is great that it is biodegradable so I throw itin my flower garden after used! And it doesn’t smell!

Interesting idea Kristen. Does it help prevent weeds?

I’ve been using this for about two months. The older cats don’t mind it but I still have regular clay litter in the laundry room that can use. The walnut is only in our master bedroom to cut down on dust. It works great for controlling the dust. I now have brown little scattered all over my white carpet however. I can deal with that.
New kitten problem: I just rescued a kitten that is about 3 months old. She was previously using generic feline pine from a feed store. She has been with us one week and now has a terrible mysterious breakout all over her chin. The only change in her new life is the litter. Anyone experience this?
I would hate to have to change on her account but will do what is necessary.

Are you, by any chance, feeding your kitty in a plastic food bowl? I’ve had more than one suffer what the vet called kitty acne caused by an allergy to plastic. I stopped using plastic altogether and the problem went away.

My husband and I buy the Multi Cat clumping litter. It’s not as dusty as other ones. The cats like it too.

Thanks for the intro PJs Pets in Pickering!

We recently switched from WBCL to the Blue Buffalo and we like BB much better. We liked the fact that WBCL is made from natural ingredients and is flushable but the strong corn/dirt smell was overwhelming when combined with cat waste, and it also did nothing for odor control in our small apartment. We have had much better luck with the BB walnut-based litter. The odor control is better and it doesn’t have a strong smell dry or wet. It is also flushable, which is convenient. The litter is dark brown so you have to be prepared to sift through to get the waste, but most cat-parents know where in the box their cats routinely mark. We still remove waste every day to ward off smells in our small apartment but we like this better than WBCL, so far.

I just tried the multi-cat formula and was very disappointed in how dusty it was. When I put my hand in the litter it looked like I had put it in a bag of cocoa powder, it was completely covered in dark brown dust. The dust stuck to the cats’ feet and tracked little kitty paw prints all over the house, on my clothes and stained the white kitty’s feet.

The odor control was amazing however. Too bad it was so dusty though…

i use feline pine. i love it. it turns to saw dust when the cats pee on it. and can be put in your compost. i take out the poo every time they go. not much tracked around either. and i like the smell of the pine.

hey my sister is having a hair loss issue with one of her 3 cats. she uses blue buffalo cat litter. we thought it was fleas, but she used the advantage for 2 months now, fleas are gone. hair is slowly growing back, but legs are even devoid of hair. maybe stress? the poor cats have to stay in one room all the time. HELP!!! she is going to take him to vet, but it is so expensive. and usually you always get bad news. :(

I was an avid user of Purr & Simple – loved it! I was disappointed when the company sold out to Blue but decided to keep an open mind about the company change. Unfortunately, my initial instincts about the fall in quality were right. The litter is now so dusty I almost have to wear a mask to scoop out the clumps, and my cat’s white feet are completely brown when he gets out of his pan. These things never happened with Purr. Very sad.

I have been using Blue Buffalo Multi cat litter for 3 months and I will never have to switch again. Coming home and not having to smell urine in the room where the box is located has been a blessing. My cats love the litter and whats even btter is the litter box is easy to lift , so lightweight, my back thanks Blue Buffalo as well. The money I paid for the bags are well worth it. The litter last longer so that means I save money. And no more lugging those heavy boxs up my stairs. Its nice to have fresh air again.
