The folks over at Carol’s Ferals (Remember them? They were the winners of the Catification Shelter Makeover sponsored by The Vertical Cat. We’ll be bringing you an update on that project very soon!) made this awesome cat climbing structure for their shelter by re-purposing a retail store fixture. This is a great example of creative catification! If you’re looking to make something totally one-of-a-kind for your cats, check out your local thrift stores or stop by an equipment liquidation or auction. You never know what you’ll find and with a little imagination, you can make something that both you and your cats will love.

Clearly the kitties at Carol’s Ferals and quite pleased with their awesome accommodations!

Clearly, this is catification of the best kind! Love repurposing things like this — and for such deserving cats!

Does anyone know what they “re-purposed” to make this? Was it modular furniture taken apart, shelves, cubbies…? I feel like I’ve seen stuff like this, but I just can’t figure out where.

I work at a second hand store, and lemme tell you – at least 5 times a day, I say, “Ohh my cats would love that!”. Anything from shelving to old TV consoles. Speaker casings I especially think were made for cats – the carpeted ones with the holes already there? Yeah. If I only had more room…

I would also love to know where they found those cubes and how they connected them!
I’ve been searching over a month for a cat climbing/book storage system or DIY set up, with focus on cubes. Retail ones are too expensive and not customizable. Cat trees serve only one purpose and take up space. Not helpful to show these with no additional info.

The cubes are old store displays, if I remember what Carol said correctly. Each cube is actually four pieces (a curved top, a curved bottom, and then the straight parts of the sides. You can build them taller or shorter depending on preference. They are connected to each other with simple particle board I think using bolts, nuts, and washers.

I love the cubes and would like to know more information about them. I foster feral moms and socialize their babies for adoption so always looking for interesting things for them all to hang out in. This is perfect! Are they clay or wood. Hard to tell what material they are constructed from. More information would be great! Thanks.

Yes it is a grand DIY idea. The design itself is not a groundbreaking cubist design but its just great to look at, especially with all the cats. Nice job!!

I use old milk crates. They aren’t pretty but if you paint them they are acceptable aesthetically. My cat loves to paw at toys through the grating.
