It’s a new year, and it’s time for a new thing. Five years ago, I started gathering my design finds for cat lovers together in a little blog at Moderncat.net. The site grew much bigger and much faster than I ever could have imagined and I am so lucky to have such wonderful readers who share my passion for cats and design.

Over the years, I also started some other related ventures: Moderncat Studio, where I work with a team of cat-loving designers to create unique handcrafted cat products, and Moderncat Distribution, which imports and distributes The Cat’s Trapeze in the US and Canada.

It’s now time to bring everything together under one new — and very distinctive — name. I am so pleased to introduce Hauspanther, a new brand created especially for design-conscious cat people.

Hauspanther.com is your go-to source for all things design- and cat-related. It is an online magazine featuring my design finds for cat lovers, along with other news and useful information for living stylishly with cats. Please take a look at the About page for more details.

One feature I’m very excited to share with you is the Hauspanther Gear Guide, which will provide you with a comprehensive way to search for the latest and greatest cat gear. We are still creating the Gear Guide, so check back as more things are added. The Gear Guide will be continuously updated in order to provide you with the most useful information and links.

At Hauspanther.com you will also be able to shop for Hauspanther products, and, for the retailers out there working with Moderncat Distribution, we will be consolidating that portion of the business under one “roof” as well. More details coming soon.

I’m always searching for new cat products, and I just came across these for the first time. They are not the kind of cat products I usually write about, but it could be something that my fellow female cat owners might be interested in. These are self-defense keychains, meant to be carried as shown below in situations where you might need to defend yourself from an attacker, a terrible thought, but one I admit has crossed my mind more than once. Instead of holding your keys between your fingers, like I used to do all the time, these keychains have two holes for your fingers so you can get a good grip if you have to use it. The idea is that you would have a simple weapon to defend yourself if necessary.

I’m not entirely sure this would actually provide any protection, but I suppose it does boost confidence, which may in and of itself help you fend off an attacker. I don’t know. I’m sure there’s plenty of psychology behind this kind of thing. But anyway, I never noticed these cat-themed versions, but it makes sense. They are something you might want to have on your keychain and the cat face design lends itself to the functionality. There are several to choose from, and some are also bottle openers. Last week I showed you the work of my friend Sebastien Millon. I’m very excited to announce that Sebastien has partnered with Cattoo Design to create a line of temporary tattoos featuring some of his cat illustrations!

There are currently three designs to choose from: Kitty with Fish, Lion, and Identity Crisis featuring an adorable little cow cat who is a bit confused.

The tattoos are sold in a package with two sheets of the same design for $5, or you can buy all three designs (2 sheets of each) for just $12. The sheets measure 2″ x 3″. These are really fun to wear and would be great for Halloween! The tattoos are easy to apply and remove, they last 3 to 5 days, plus they’re safe and non-toxic and made right here in the US.

Sebastien’s temporary tattoos, along with the other tribal designs, are available from the Cattoo Design online shop.

RC Tees has partnered with British artist Beth Wilson from Doodlecats to create this awesomely cool kitty-themed sweatshirt, just in time for the cooler weather. Beth’s original drawing is hand printed in gold ink on the back of a women’s eco-fleece Alternative Apparel sweatshirt with off-the-shoulder neckline and front kangaroo pocket. Very cool!

Do you like building things? Then this is a project for you. A group of architects in Vienna, Austria, selling on Etsy under the name Donkey & Friends, makes these DIY kits for you to create your own complex 3D paper forms that can be used as sculpture, lampshades, or for any other decorative application. This geometric cat head is formed out of heavy paper. You order the flat sheets of printed paper, cut out the pieces and glue them together, and you’ve got something pretty spectacular.

The Cat Head DIY Lampshade Kit is available from the Donkey & Friends Etsy Shop for €30, or about $40 US.
