Here’s an interesting concept from designer Geoffrey Cooper. It’s the Cat Dome, a habitat for your kitty and your fish to hang out together. Yes, cats do enjoy watching fish move around in a tank, so the interactive element is an original concept, but, I’m wondering, would this make the poor fish live in a constant state of panic? Maybe certain types of fish wouldn’t mind — I’m not a fish expert — but it seems a little cruel. What do you think?

These incredible pieces of functional art are called Katzenhoehle, or cat caves. Each is handmade of felted wool by German artist Dornroeschen Filzunikate. There are several styles and sizes to choose from and the caves are apparently washable. They look so delicate, but very cozy, too.

Moderncat reader Andrea really wanted a neko chigura after seeing it posted here last month, but since they don’t seem to be available in the US, she decided to make her own. She used 1/2 inch piping and 1 inch strips of calico fabric with a coil basket weaving method to create a shape similar to the traditional Japanese neko chigura cat beds. I love the photo above with her two cats testing the unfinished design with a hole in the top!

Andrea ran into a structural challenge, since her cats kept sitting on the top, causing the basket to cave in. She tried to reinforce the sides, but eventually gave up and dismantled it to create two separate beds, which seem to work quite nicely.

I hope that Andrea can figure out a way to reinforce the basket to achieve a similar structure to the original neko chigura. If she does, perhaps she will share her design with us.

After I posted the Neko Chigura traditional Japanese cat bed a couple of weeks ago, many readers expressed disappointment because it is not available in the US. Glass and steel and a place for kitty to nap, what could be more Moderncat? This gorgeous table, designed by Koichi Futatsumata from Japanese design firm Case-Real, combines sleek modern materials with a comfy rattan hammock for kitty to lounge in. Designed to put kitty on display, as in a museum showcase or store window, this is completely in keeping with my decorating style. I believe that cats should be given beautiful–but cozy–places to lounge so they can become the art in your home. What do you think?

West Paw Design just released several fresh new colors of their Eco Nap Mat. This pet bed is not only stylish, but it’s very earth-friendly. 85% of the fabric is from recycled plastic water bottles, but you’d never know it because it is incredibly soft! Available in several sizes, machine washable and made in the USA.

I absolutely love it when a cat product satisfies multiple needs and this cool little item from France does just that. The Cubicat has two hideaway compartments plus a top cushion that can all be used for napping while the inner compartments can also be used for storing toys. There are two sisal scratching pads on the outside, one low and one high. And finally, the whole thing is sturdy enough for you to use as extra seating. And on top of that it comes in hip colors and has a nice sleek look. I love European design!

Not sure if this is available in the US, but the Cubicat sells for 59,90 Euros at Wanimo.com and you can get the sisal scratching pad refills for 2,10 Euros.

Last month when I showed you a concept for a cat bed from Steve Lukes, several readers left feedback for Steve concerning the food bowl being right next to the sleeping area. Well, Steve went back to the drawing board (well, back to the computer) and revised his ideas based on the feedback. The ultra modern cat bed now has a scratching pad by the sleeping area instead of a food bowl. While he was at it, he also came up with another idea for a two-story, raised bed. I’m sure he’d like to hear what you think, and if you happen to be looking for a product designer, I hear he’s available!

The top of this contemporary carrier is easily removable, allowing you to use the padded bottom portion as a bed while at home. A while back I showed you the Banana Leaf Cat Cave. Here are two more additions to the banana leaf line, this time raised up high on a sisal wrapped pedestal that can be used as a scratching post. One of my favorite French cat style websites OhMyCat posted these beautiful photos of a traditional Japanese cat bed known as neko chigura. Based on a design for an infant cradle, each neko chigura is handcrafted using rice straw, which keeps kitty warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Neko chigura beds are available in five sizes ranging from 4,000 Yen ($43 US) to 17,000 Yen ($184 US). I’ve never seen these in the US, but would love to find one.
