Odin

My Big Kitty is a Bengal. He’s a Sepia Snow Marble named Odin who lives up to his Norse God name in attitude and stature.

He is pictured here in the lounge chair he has since owned & destroyed. When it finally got so bad the stuffing was falling out of the arms, we had to give the chair away to a nice lady who did reupholstering. Odin has since taken to sleeping high in our closet on top of the Autumn & Winter sweater stash and one of the back deck sitting room chairs that he favors to leave fur all over.

Because this former lounge chair (giant personal scratch post) used to sit at the foot of the bed (where he could lord over us), he has taken to scratching defiantly at the corner of our bed in protest. He is really mad his chair is gone!

Odin needs a lounger/scratch pad of his own again, and the Scratch’n Slumber Comfort Lounge sounds like just the thing, for kitty with a god complex!

Rudy

Here is my big boy, Rudy! He’s an 18-pound lover boy who loves to sleep in this metal basket (that I bought to put the mail in!) but as you can see he doesn’t quite fit! So, he could really use a new lounger.

Merry

My name is Merry Noel because I was rescued in the month of December. But you can call me Merry… just don’t call me late for dinner! You can tell I have not missed many meals since I was rescued.

A couple years ago I was dumped at the local animal control with my litter of kittens. All of my babies were adopted, but I was left behind. I am now living in the temporary site of the Forever Home Feline Ranch in Springfield, Illinois. I enjoy sleeping in any comfy place I can find (as shown in the photo), but I would really enjoy a Scratch’n Slumber Comfort Lounge that I could share with all my friends at the Ranch.

Rory

This is Rory. He is a 6-year-old Applehead Siamese. Rory is big, lean, and muscular, tipping the scales at around 15 pounds! The vet has assured us that he is not at all overweight, but simply a *big cat*. When he stretches out, Rory is about 3 feet long (no joke!); he can easily reach up and touch our kitchen countertop. Rory is a gentle giant, so he sleeps wherever the other 2 cats aren’t occupying, though his favorite place to snooze is on my husband’s lap. I’d love for him to have a special bed to call his own, and that’s why Rory needs the Scratch’n Slumber Comfort Lounge made especially for big-boned kitties like him.

Mac

Mac is an oddball in all his activities. This includes sleeping. In the picture you can see him sleeping on an old trumpet case. More often than not, he chooses to sleep on footwear, namely the shoes that I need to be wearing at that point in time. He also has opted to use my suitcase, couches, and legs as his scratching post. This Scratch’n Slumber lounge would not only provide my legs with some much needed recovery time, but would give him a place to call a bed.

I have liked the FurHaven Cat Cave Bedsince I first found it back in 2008 and I’ve wanted to test one, so I finally went out and bought it. This is the bed that made me say, okay, a little faux fur is alright, if it’s tastefully done. I love the way this bed combines a soft white fur border with two-tone ultra suede in wonderful mod colors. The sides of the bed are soft but sturdy enough to keep the nice angled shape that allows kitty to peek out. It also has a comfy removable pillow inside.

It’s still a bit warm here in Arizona to need a snuggly bed, but I know that this will be popular in the cooler weather. Even now, I found someone to model it for me. (This is a new face at the Moderncat household, she just arrived. I’m supposedly fostering her, but she’s pretty sweet. We’ll see how everyone gets along. She’s such a good model! How can I resist?)

It is with great sadness that I bring you the news that one of the original modern cat design companies, Marmalade Pet Care, is currently liquidating the inventory of their luxury cat beds and scratchers. Hollywood Franklin just released the first accessory for their mod climbing tower: the Cabana. This accessory allows you to add on a little curtain between two of the large platforms to create a secluded hideaway for kitty. Franklin likes his Cabana at the top of the tower where he can keep an eye on things (I’m completely in love with Franklin!)

The Cabanas are hand sewn in Los Angeles using MOOD designer fabrics. The Cabana kit comes with mounting hardware and installation instructions. Choose from black or white fabric. Cabana kits sell for $49.50. More details here.

One of my all time favorite modern cat products is the Sweet Loungefrom Marmalade Pet Care. And it’s not just my favorite, but the cats absolutely adore it as well. It is almost constantly in use — for both scratching and lounging — and it has held up incredibly well. We’ve had ours for a couple of years now and it shows some wear, as you would expect with corrugated cardboard, but it’s still beautiful. And you can even flip it over to get double use out of this particular design. (I have a little confession, I keep one good side for when company comes over, and the other side is for everyday use.)

I recently came across this ultra modern pet bed from what appears to be a new company called Pawsitively Modern. The beds are individually handcrafted from hardwoods including white oak, walnut, or maple and they come in three sizes, extra small, small, and medium. The high resiliency foam cushion is covered in stain-resistant Smart Suede fabric from Crypton and is available in an assortment of modern colors. The beds normally range from $425 to $635 US, depending on the size and the wood selection, but sale prices are currently listed from $361 to $540.

The bed appears to be the only item on their website at this point, but I will definitley be keeping an eye on this company to see what they do next.

Here’s a fun new product that lets you create a customized climbing structure for your cats. It’s the Catty Stacks, designer cat house system. These super strong corrugated cardboard boxes can be connected in three dimensions to create all sorts of configurations for climbing, perching, playing, napping, and hiding. The nice folks at Catty Stacks sent us a set to test out and they were an instant hit. Here are Simba and Dee checking out the new play station:

The boxes ship flat and are really easy to set-up, just unfold and insert some tabs into slots and you’re ready to go. The special corner design allows you to clip the boxes together (clips are included) to create a nice sturdy structure. Once the boxes are clipped together, you can lift the whole stack to move it (just make sure there aren’t any cats inside!)

Holes on the side of the boxes allow kitties to enter and exit and connect from one box to the next. When two boxes are clipped together, you can remove a larger portion of the side panel to create a more spacious inner lounge area. When boxes are stacked on top of each other, the vertical access holes are staggered, making it easy for kitty to get her footing as she climbs up through the boxes. The thing I’m most impressed with is the strength of the double thickness cardboard. This is some of the strongest cardboard I’ve seen, so the Catty Stacks should last a long time.

There are a number of accessories you can purchase as add-ons for your Catty Stacks, including a crawl tube that connects between two boxes, special felt pillows for extra comfort, and an animation wand that connects easily to one of the accessory points and has a clip on the end to attach kitty’s favorite toy. This may be my favorite Etsy Find yet! This beautiful modern kitty hammock is from Etsy seller Fickle Feline and it is so very Moderncat. The frame is handcrafted from 3/4″ furniture grade poplar plywood and sealed with a water based protective finish. The frame assembles easily with no hardware required, just slide the notched pieces together. Brilliant!

If you’ve got very active cats who need to take their energy out on something other than your curtains, then this may be the product for you. They sent us one to test out and as you can see, Ando thinks it’s pretty comfy, although he’s a little too lazy to use it as it is really intended, but I can certainly imagine how this could provide a good distraction for some active kittens.

They sent us one to test and as you can see below, everyone loves. Every time I turn around, someone else is on the Scratch’n Slumber. I’ve moved it all over the house — on the catio, in the living room, in the office — and they always find it. I’ve even seen a little “king of the hill” action happening when it’s time to decide whose turn it is.

Just for reference, this is the B’Tweener model. Left to right: Theo weighs about 17 lbs.; Simba weighs 9 lbs.; and Flora weighs 6 lbs. (she’s tiny). That’s Ando in the top photo and he weighs about 15 lbs.

The Scratch’n Slumber cedar platforms are all handcrafted in Washington state using Western red cedar. Each one is hand-sanded and constructed without glues or stains, just natural cedar.

The Scratch’n Slumber Comfort Centers sell for $169 to $189 US, depending on the size. Replacement padlets are available for $59 to $79.
