Everyone’s favorite internet cat Maru recently acquired a fabulous cardboard hideaway, which he demonstrated for us on YouTube. This appears to be Kamakura’s Lair, a cardboard cat habitat created in Japan and available through the Japanese website Rakuten.

What a perfect little hideaway made from heavy duty cardboard. Maru’s a lucky guy, since it looks like this creation costs ¥9300, which is about $120 US.

Since creating the original Moderncat Studio Scratch Tower, we’ve had lots of requests for a taller version. Some cats like to stretch out while they scratch and they need something tall. So, with the help of the team at Juggernaut Design, we developed a new wall-mounted version of our popular Scratch Tower.

Now you can choose the perfect height for your kitty to stretch and scratch, plus our wall-mounted scratcher doesn’t take up any valuable floor space. It’s great for small spaces, like hallways.

The wall-mounted version of the Scratch Tower comes in two sizes, a small scratcher measuring 12″  and a large version with a full 24″ of scratching surface. Both scratchers extend from the wall approximately 6″ and securely attach with white powder coated steel brackets. You can choose either the Trio or the Triangle shape for the cardboard and red or black ball knobs.

The wall-mounted scratcher is made with the same high-quality cardboard as our original freestanding Scratch Tower. The cardboard pieces are held together with compression, so there are no adhesives or glues.

Kitty deserves a sweet treat this Valentine’s Day! Check out this uber-adorable catnip chocolate sampler from Etsy seller Mycrobe Catnip Toys. Four handmade needle felted bon bons filled with yummy catnip come nestled in candy wrappers inside a cute green box. So sweet! Kitty will love you forever.

French designer Sinan Sigic of Atelier Hapax creates one-of-a-kind objects using recycled materials. This unique cat tree is made from an old lamp base wrapped with 444 meters of sisal rope. The base and shelf were added to give the cats a place to perch. Brilliant! I’m hitting the thrift stores this weekend to see what I can find for making something similar.

I’d love to see other creative ideas you might have for re-purposing objects to make beautiful cat-friendly pieces.

A sleek cube with a soft-close drawer above and a thick padded bed below, The Bloq can be used as a nightstand or side table. This is a great example of a product that seamlessly integrates a cat hideaway with an attractive piece of modern furniture.

Armed with a design degree, Nathan wanted to create a beautiful and functional piece of furniture for his cat Miss Trudy. After quite a bit of development, he came up with this sleek design made from Baltic birch plywood with two fabric kitty hammocks and a built-in, replaceable cardboard scratcher. Not only is it good looking, but it’s 100% Made in the USA.

One of our favorite modern pet product companies, Hepper, just released a new pet feeder that I absolutely love. It’s the Nom Nom feeder and it’s super sleek and functional. I’ve been fascinated with the Ponoko design service since they launched in 2007, but until now, I hadn’t found anyone using it for cat-related items. If you’re not familiar with Ponoko, it is an online service that allows designers to upload files for furniture, jewelry, gadgets, etc., then anyone can download the designs (some are free, others have a licensing fee), choose your own materials, pay, and Ponoko manufactures the item and ships it to you. Everything is custom made, so there’s no warehousing, plus the Ponoko system uses local manufacturing facilities to reduce shipping. It’s a pretty great way to get something that’s totally custom at a reasonable price. You can read more about how the process works on the Ponoko website.

Enter Catter Wallin’. This Illinois-based company has created two designs for unique cat climbing shelves, the Kitty Climber and the Kitty Cozy. Both designs are available for download for just $1.00 each from Ponoko, then you can choose from a variety of materials to have the shelves made just for you. Options include bamboo, MDF, baltic birch plywood, etc. You may want to contact Catter Wallin’ to find out more about the materials they recommend, but it looks like all the options are quite affordable. I look forward to seeing more cat items on Ponoko soon!

Note: I agree that a covered litter box is not appropriate for all cats, especially older cats or cats with mobility issues, but if you have a cats that uses a covered litter box, this is definitely a stylish option.

I love cat scratchers that have an architectural quality and The Sky Scratcher is a perfect example. I’m spending the weekend at the Phoenix Feline Fanciers annual cat show in downtown Phoenix (this is a great show that not only celebrates the breeds, but they also support cat rescue. All About Animals Rescue is prominently displayed at the front entrance and yesterday they adopted out all the rescue cats they brought with them!) While at the show, I came across a brand new cat toy that you are going to flip for! It’s the Cat-a-pole and it may be the best new cat toy on the market.

The Cat-a-pole is an interactive wand toy with some features that set it apart from all the others. First, it is designed to create a fabulous, unpredictable motion that is endlessly intriguing to cats. The Cat-a-pole has a pom pom and feather toy on the end that flits about like a mouse when you drag it across the floor or like a bird when it zips through the air. Kitty will go nuts!

Second, and what I think is the greatest feature ever, the Cat-a-pole does not use a string for attaching the toy. Instead the toy is attached to a long thin plastic tube. This is what creates the unpredictable motion, but best of all, there’s no string to get tangled! Other wand toys are constantly getting tied in knots or tangling around the cat or the furniture. The Cat-a-pole doesn’t do this. Brilliant!
