Note: I agree that a covered litter box is not appropriate for all cats, especially older cats or cats with mobility issues, but if you have a cats that uses a covered litter box, this is definitely a stylish option.

This is one of the most brilliant DIY projects I’ve seen! Moderncat reader David was looking for a mat for outside the litter box that would actually trap the litter to prevent it from scattering. He also wanted something stylish, so he searched the internet and found some excellent products that do just the trick. It’s perforated floor tile that snaps together to fit almost any size. It’s usually used for garage floors, workshops, decking and various commercial applications, but it is perfect for creating a customized litter mat!

These felt litter box hiders and cat beds are showcased on the Dutch website Molitli, which features unique, handcrafted items as an alternative to mass produced merchandise. There’s only a little information about each item, but it looks like you can order the beds and litter hiders in a few different felt colors. A bit pricey, but each one is made to order.

Here’s a new twist on the litter box. It’s the Litter Spinner, a litter box that you don’t have to scoop (sort of). Kitty enters the large drum to do her business, then instead of scooping, you simply rotate the drum on the base and solids fall into a drawer while the clean litter stays in the drum. Empty the drawer and you’re good to go.

The Litter Spinner doesn’t have a lot of parts and it’s completely manual, no electrical connections required. It’s kind of similar in concept to the Roll’n Clean Litter Box by Omega Paw, but the Litter Spinner sits on a base instead of rolling across the floor.

I first introduced these exquisite handcrafted cat products from Dutch designer Marly Gommans over three years ago. I’m always excited to try a new non-clay cat litter, so I was intrigued when I found Purr & Simple. So far, I’ve tried litters made from corn, wood, wheat, soy, and paper, but Purr & Simple is completely different. It is made by Eco-Shell Inc, a company that specializes in creating Earth-friendly products using agricultural by-products. Purr & Simple is the first cat litter to use by-products from the tree nut industry, and they have discovered something awesome. Apparently, tree nut shells, including the inner membrane surrounding the nut, have incredible natural odor absorbing properties. I can tell you, I’ve tested this new litter and I am very impressed! Mother Nature may have solved our litter box odor problems!

I first encountered Purr & Simple last year at the Global Pet Expo. I met Gail and David from Eco-Shell in the Purr & Simple booth where they were using a sophisticated demonstration system to show just how good Purr & Simple is at eliminating odor. They had a special machine that pulls the air into a glass tube filled with crystals that change color according to the amount of odor (ammonia, I believe) in the air. They ran the test on each litter for me and the Purr & Simple results were so dramatically lower than ANY of the other litters, it certainly caught my attention. (Not to mention that Gail and David are also really nice!)

So they sent me some of the litter to test for myself and, I have to say, it exceeded my expectations. Purr & Simple comes in both pellets and a new clumping formula. I tested both and they both absorb odor equally well. The pellet formula, like most pellet litters, has very little dust and is easy to clean. The clumping formula clumps really well, forming nice solid clumps that are easy to scoop, plus the cats love the texture. Purr & Simple is a dark brown color, which hides the solids (and can also make it a little challenging to find the solids when scooping). The clumping formula looks like coffee grounds, with larger granules that don’t track as far as some of the lighter wood litters I’ve tried. The clumping litter does put off some dust, which is also a dark brown color and requires regular cleaning. Maybe you can think of this as a benefit, because it makes it pretty obvious when it’s time to clean the dust!

If you’ve been reading Moderncat for awhile, then you know I am against clay cat litter. There are only a few issues that I feel this strongly about and that I will use the blog as a platform for. I felt like it was time for a quick reminder on the issue, plus I have some interesting new things to share with you this week related to non-clay litter options. But first — in order to preempt the comments and emails I sometimes get when this topic comes up — I want to clarify something: I’m not saying that you love your cats any less if you use clay litter. I believe that there are several reasons why people still use clay litter:

1. Clay cat litter is readily available in every supermarket, grocery store, mass retailer, and convenience store.
2. It is the standard, it has been used for decades, and it performs very well.
3. It is cheap.
4. Many cat owners are unaware of the dangers of using clay litter because no scientific studies have been done to clearly show why it is bad. People simply don’t know.

So there you have it. Availability, performance, price, and awareness. And this is all controlled by the BIG manufacturers who have huge marketing budgets and distribution channels and who have dominated the cat litter market for years. Well, things are starting to change with several new companies now producing excellent non-clay litters and some of the big manufacturers also adding non-clay litters to their line.

So let’s start with the awareness piece. Here’s a summary of why I feel that clay cat litter is bad:

BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

1. Clay is strip mined to produce clay cat litter.
2. Used clumping clay cat litter NEVER biodegrades in the landfill.

BAD FOR CAT’S HEALTH & HUMAN HEALTH

1. Clay litter contains silica, which is a known carcinogen when inhaled.
2. Clumping clay litter contains sodium bentonite which expands to 15 times its volume and forms an INSOLUBLE mass when it contacts liquid. It does the same thing when cats ingest it as they groom themselves after using the litter box.

To address the performance issue, I have to admit, non-clay litters just don’t work as well as clay. However, I feel that if you are committed to making the switch, you will find a solution that you and your cats can live with. I have one new non-clay litter to tell you about this week and you’ll have a chance to win some to try for yourself.

The other big issue is price. Because of the smaller distribution, the non-clay litters are still quite expensive, usually around $1/lb. but with more and more people buying non-clay litter, the price should come down. I have a terrific budget busting litter tip coming up later this week, so stay tuned.

I just found this new litter boxyesterday at PetSmart. I bought one on the spot and immediately brought it home and set it up and I love it! It’s hard to tell from the photo above, but it’s huge — perfect for a multi-cat household. Up until now, I’ve been using large storage boxes (in addition to my SmartCat Box, ModKat, and Litter Robot). The storage boxes were UGLY but I needed something large, especially for my Maine Coon who needs plenty of room to spin around before doing his business.

Eleanor and her husband, a diplomatic couple who move frequently, prefer a simple, minimalist design aesthetic, and with five special needs animals who share their home, they were having difficulty finding just the right decor items that would suit their lifestyle. Items needed to be designed to fit their aesthetic, to function for the needs of their animals, and to be disassembled, shipped, and reassembled when moving. They finally hired a designer to create several custom pieces. Here are the results.

CAT STAIRS & WINDOW LEDGES

Their current residence is an adapted office space with cathedral windows and a very long, narrow hallway. The tall bookcases that line the hallway are natural perches for cats. To give safe access, they created a circular staircase, with carpeted treads, that allows even the older male cat to ascend easily, with intermediate platforms for resting along the way. It attaches to a bookcase with a simple wooden hook and a single screw, and has a detachable weighted base for stability. The steps have wooden supports, also attached by one screw, and the carpets are removed and replaced using a fine blade to lift, and a few points of strong adhesive to attach. Assembly or disassembly and packing take only minutes with a single tool.

The cathedral windows have deep brick tile ledges, so they created 12 lightweight custom beds to fit these ledges. The cats have comfortable places to lounge, sleep, and watch the world go by, and the beds can easily be packed, or even used as packing material, without adding weight to the container.

THE ULTIMATE CLIMBER & SCRATCHER

One cat, Gigi, survived panleukopenia, a usually fatal kitten disease. She is blind, deaf, and without sensation on one side of her body, and has limited sight and hearing on the other. This had to be taken into account in all designs. A large custom climber and scratcher provides a solid, carpeted inclined plane that all the cats use for scratching, which also allows the blind cat to climb safely to and from the perch on the top. It also has a lounging space on the base that allows a cat to sleep in complete privacy, while still keeping an ear on the environment.

The high level of the perch allows for access to a window, regardless of the architecture in any given residence. The wood stain and carpeting are the same as in all the other pieces, making this the key piece in the suite, linking the designs across the interior.

THE LITTER HUTCH

To accommodate the litter boxes, as well as create a storage space for litter supplies, they created three custom litter hutches. These simple black lacquered boxes have no exterior decoration. Entry and exit are through an opening on the side. The inside is fully carpeted, to assist in keeping litter inside the box, and the support framework is out of sight. The entire remaining wall is hinged inside, and secured with strong magnets, so that nothing disrupts the elegant line. However, it lowers flat, to allow easy access to the litter box, and rapid cleaning.

Since one of the cats objects to having his fur touch the inside wall of the standard covered litter box, oversized storage boxes replace the usual litter pan. For storage, a separate, smaller hutch stacks on top of the larger one. It is also carpeted and has a magnetically secured wall.

There are three sets of litter hutches throughout the interior. One set serves as a room divider in the living/entertaining room, another as a bookcase and bedside table, and the third is in a busy office, where it often ends up being the extra shelf that every office needs. Visitors are surprised to discover that these are not standard home furnishings, but cat litter hutches!

THE SAFETY BOX

Special needs animals pose their own issues. The blind cat needs a place to eat undisturbed and an environment that takes into account her vulnerability. She cannot be left unsupervised for long periods of time. Like all cats, she loves to run, to climb, and to get into things, however, unlike a fully sighted and hearing cat, she can fail to see a door, step casually off a table or shelf because she cannot see that there is nothing there, or fail to detect the approach of a threat.

Eleanor and her husband have two special needs dogs — not cat friendly. Normally, the dogs live in their own room, with a direct outdoor exit. However, “Privilege Time” upstairs is a part of their daily routine, and the cats need to be securely protected for that period.

The safety box is the solution to these issues. A completely secure environment, it contains three levels, joined by carpeted ramps that overlap the center of the base, so that there is no possibility of a cat falling any farther than 10 inches. Since the levels are cushioned, even if a fall occurs, the landing surface is soft.

The floor level contains a litter hutch fitted to a regular litter pan, the entry to which is masked by the ramp to the first level. There is also a lacquered food and water tray, for easy cleaning. A small, magnetically fastened entry door allows the cats entry and exit when it is open, but holds firmly in place when closed. The lower walls, also with magnetic catches, serve as flaps that can be lowered flat for easy cleaning access.

The roof of the hutch has a fitted cushion, attached with Velcro, easily removed for cleaning. A third, L-shaped level, in the center of the large Plexiglas panes, allows any cat in the box a full view of the environment. This level also has a soft cushion.

Three levels allows three cats to co-exist in a small space during the dogs’ Privilege Time without disagreements about who is lying on whose tail.

Measuring 41″ x 41″ at the base, the box is 52″ tall. It is constructed from lacquered wood and Plexiglas, with ventilation slots carved in the roof and the lower sides to ensure clean air, and to allow odors from the litter hutch to escape. The roof, attached by six screws, is easily removed, as are the Plexiglas panes and their frames. For shipping, it holds the disassembled cat perches, the steps and base from the cat stairway, and all the window cushions, with room left over for litter scoops, toys, a full tin of the lacquer and the remaining carpet, for repairs and touch-ups after a move.

All the cats quickly colonized the safety box, with the blind cat voluntarily spending most of her nap times inside. The older cat also loves the box, and they are often found curled around each other on the top level. The dogs, who used to run straight to the closed door of the room in which the cats were secured and bark insistently, run past the box, often in a frenzied search for cats, apparently unaware that the cats are watching them with varying degrees of disdain through the window of the box they have just passed.

Earlier this month I showed you some beautiful climbing furniture from Korean company Trillo.
