New York Times Designer Cat Furniture Article Oct 11, 2007

In the article “Good Design, Happy Cats?” published on October 11, 2007, The New York Times reviews several pieces of modern cat furniture and discusses the merits of good design for cats and their owners. Writer Chris Colin, and his two cats Sam and Bobby, personally tested the Buddha cat shelves by Square Cat Habitat, the Cat Cocoon by One Form Design, Pounce from Everyday Studio, and several other modernist-inspired products. He describes Sam and Bobby’s reactions to the new items, including Sam’s regard for “expensive cardboard as his birthright.” Great article!

Rondo Stand by cat-interiors

One of Moderncat’s most favorite pieces of modern cat furniture is Rondo by cat-interiors. The elegantly simple form and choice of materials allow Rondo to fit seamlessly into a modern home. Not only is Rondo beautiful, but it is also multi-functional, serving as a bed, scratching surface, and climbing platform. Rondo can be used with the sturdy freestanding base or it can be mounted to the wall with hidden hardware.

The outer covering is available in natural wicker, or in various colors of felt or leather. The interior is fitted with two cusions, one on the back surface and a bed cushion on the bottom. Both cushions come with removable brushed wool fleece covers that are machine washable. Replacement cushions can be purchased separately.

In order to allow your cat to use the outer surface of Rondo as a scratching surface, separate scratch covers are available, made from hardwearing needle felt. The scratch covers come in a variety of colors and attach securely around the form with Velcro fasteners.

Rondo is one of several products from cat-interiors that can be considered a true design object.

Cat-interiors: Cat Beds as Design Objects

At the top of the list of outstanding modern cat product designers are the people at cat-interiors. This German company creates exquisite furnishings for cats, emphasizing both design and functionality. They believe that cat furnishings, such as cat beds and scratching posts, do not need to reveal their purpose at first glance. Instead, unusual design can transform these objects into “furniture showpieces.”

In addition to creating beautifully designed objects, cat-interiors also seeks to create pieces that have been thoroughly thought-out while keeping the users (i.e. cats) in mind. One of the design criteria at cat-interiors is that cats must accept a new product, use it, and visibly show how happy they are with it.

Made with only the highest quality materials and craftsmanship, the products from cat-interiors are meant to withstand years of use. Everything is manufactured in Germany and made by hand, not in assembly line mass-production. This kind of quality and attention to detail undoubtedly results in cat furnishings that can truly be called design objects.

Cat-interiors currently offers several styles of cat beds. The various styles have an outer cover of either wicker or felt and all have a luxurious inner cushion with a custom filling developed specifically for cats. The filing is a non-allergenic flaked latex that forms a hollow when cats sit on it. All cushion covers are removable and machine washable.
